would of, should of and whatever people write instead of they're is my pet grrrrr

but capitalization for the majority of posts in poker forums where the poster is not a typist is lol waste of time imo

"would of, should of" - it's unlikely that those who write that realise it's wrong. Or, to be fair, care.

"their", "there", "they're", & "theyre", as above.

Blame the Schools, & Parents.

I blame the internet poker forums which frown upon posters criticising lazy illiteracy in others' posts.

What a great expression - sums it up really. Can write right, won't write right.

I have heard newsreaders say gonna and wanna, presumably their producers or directors or whatever their bosses are called have OKed it.

can talk right, won't talk right? or does language evolve over time? my guess is that capitalization on the internet is evolving too.

I disagree. We were trained to read sentences, and the correct use of capital letters is a key part of helping us quickly interpret what a piece is about. Why should forum posts be any different?

You might think it's a waste of your time,  but that's a stance that isn't considering the audience IMO.

I thought it was against the norm to criticize posters spelling and grammar mistakes on Blonde. I know you could have a field day with mine lol.

Bad grammar or spelling has never bothered me on internet forums if the persons post makes sense.
I prefer it to posts which have no spelling mistakes but make little sense.

I for one find it hard to put into writing exactly what Im trying to say, often using the wrong words so my posts can come across differently to what im actually meaning
. I wish I had the writing skills of some on here but I dont, but put me face to face with anyone and I believe I could hold my own

Yes, it evolves, & the Internet means it evolves at lightning speed. In 20, or even 10 years, "correct" written English will be a rarity. It'll be the usual line-up - Old Skool v Kidz, & the Kidz will win. But vestiges of it will remain, & any youngster who wants to do well in life will give himself a good start if he masters the art of writing correctly. It is what it is, I can handle it, but I'll be trying to put the brakes on it. It's the way of the world, old v young.

I'm shocked at the Newsreader thing - really shocked, that's bad. Err, well bad. I assume it would not be the BBC. Sky News I suppose - Red-Top TV.

Listen to the Shipping Forecast on Radio 4, to the pace, tempo, the enunciation & pronunciation, that's BBC-speak as I know it.

Does anyone recall the MOD TV/Press Guy, during the Falklands conflict, who announced all the war losses, ships sunk, aircraft down? Macdonald? Amazing oration, right up with the dreadful racist Enoch Powell in the talking stakes.

I think we are debating it, discussing it, chewing the cud, rather than critisising as such, Craig.

True, I dislike it, but the world is moving oin, & I'm sat on this bench. Sorry, sitting on this bench. Wink

Most of us are the same - some of us struggle with both the written AND spoken word, to convey our exact meaning.

Some bans on blonde are because of barneys caused when folks Posts come across "wrong", & they cannot see the words as others do. Because, I suspect, they fail to read them back to themselves before pressing "SEND".

Red-Dog is the example to follow. He "sees" a lot more detail than you or I, but he manages to convert it into words. A very rare skill.

While we're on the subject of punctuation...

What are your feelings on the use of a semicolon rather than a conjunction or comma?

I saw this last year which tickled me.

I don't use many semicolons; it's a shame.

I find it infuriating personally, owing to the fact that I am all too aware of how often I use the comma when I really ought not to. I feel as though I can't remember how to write without flaunting the comma in every other sentence. Semi colon ftw.

Commas are not my downfall - the hyphen is the one I seem to use when a semicolon would be more appropriate :-)

Thanks for the Posts & comments, I'll reply shortlly.

First, though, have you seen this theread?......

http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=41148.0

It's just a wonderfuyl thing, sofa-king, aka James Fisher is a legend.

He's an ex amateur boxer, as ugly as sin, but his heart is pure gold. He does magic tricks - real magic tricks - levitation, and side-splitting humour. A lovely, but long-suffering, wife, & a beautifully mannered son. Shite at poker, our James, but for me, he's the real spirit of blonde.

I shared my opening Table with him in a Walsall ME some 4 or 5 years back, maybe more. The Table included Devilfish, Lucy Rokach, Ali Mallu, & Steve Jelenik. Sofa doubled me up early, but then Devilfish started a dick-waving contest, & decided to target James. Mistake, BIG mistake. Sofa took Mr Uliott to the cleaners, big time, showed him bluff after bluff, & had Devilfish shaking his head and rolling his eyes. The thing is, Sofa does that "I am stupid look" very effectively.

So, back to that thread. Today, & yesterday, I have had no less than SEVEN PM's about it. All say the same thing, pretty muuch.

1) It belongs in Best of Blonde.

2) Sofa is a Legend.

PM's like that I'll take all day.

It's a privelege to know James.
