Right, just to prove what a stubborn get I am, I am going to read and troll every single post on this blog from here on in
No Barry, don't. I'm just kidding. I'm not really upset, honest. (I don't read the rubbish you write either)

I did quite a bit of driving today.
For the most part, I enjoy driving, and today several elements fell into place to make the experience particularly rewarding. I was in no particular hurry, the traffic was light, visibility was excellent, the scenery magnificent, and Radio 4 was on top form.
One of the programmes I listened to was called "Saving Species" a bi monthly conservation presentation.
Before I get to discussing the show's content, I need to introduce you to this chap.
A Californian Condor. (Aint 'e andsome?)
He's a North American vulture. He has a bald head, a red face and a 10ft wingspan.
Apparently, during the 80's, he was shot, poisoned, and robbed of his natural habitat until his numbers dwindled down to 22 individual birds. He was teetering in the very brink of extinction.
At the last moment, a conservation plan was hatched and all 22 of the remaining condors were captured and transported to the Los Angeles zoo. There they began a carefully controlled captive breeding programme, and now there are almost 400 condors living, including almost 200 that have been returned to the wild.
The project cost thirty seven million dollars.
The question put forward on the radio programme was a simple one.
After taking all the other worthy causes into consideration, was it worth it?
Bloody Hell. I've just read that Chelsea have paid 50 million for a player. I had to read twice, I thought it was a miss-print. The last time I noticed, the record was a staggering 1 million, now all of a sudden it's 50?
Puts the condor question into perspective doesn't it?

It's a lot of VAT into the public coffers though.

As this thread is clearly the home of good TV discussion (
) I thought I'd post this here...
I watched the Louis Theroux programme on today about "Ultra Zionists"
(iplayer link)
and wondered if you saw it?
I found the whole thing rather sad and also rather puzzling.

This
is
the home of good TV discussion Bongo. It is also the place to discuss Radio 4 pogrammes, serious newspaper articles, and books.
Note: This list by definition excludes Eastenders, Strictly come dancing, X factor, Celebrity anything, extracts from the red-tops, and works of fiction. (Unless it's to slag them off of course).
I don't have time to watch the Louis Theroux prog at the moment, but I definitely will, and I will report back.
BTW- I finally got around to watching "Human Planet" as suggested by Mr Boldie. It was one of the most astounding things I have ever seen.
The subject of this edition was the effect the sea has had on various peoples around the world.
One third world group made a living by diving to extraordinary depths for the purpose of laying out trawler type fishing nets nets, and then actually chasing the fish inside.
Many of these divers regularly suffer the effects of decompressiom sickness. (The Bends)
Their lives depend on air sucked from one end of a thin plastic tube, several hundred feet long. At the other end of the tube, way up on the surface, is a small wheezy compressor, no bigger than a lawnmower engine. This engine is directly responsible for the lives of the men and boys below. If it stops, they die. Simple as that. They are diving to such a depth, that they can't return to the surface without stopping to decompress.
Elsewhere in the world, we saw a tribe of people who live their entire lives at sea in little floating villages of boats. the only time they ever go ashore is to trade for the amazingly few goods that the sea can't provide.
These people ate so adapted to a life on the water, that the get "Land sick" when they go ashore. their childeren's eyes have actually mutated so that they can see equally well under water.
Wow!

Not a Dire Straits track but a favourite of mine. Enjoy the story telling and a wee bit of history in as well.
The story of the men behind the Mason-Dixon line:
Just got around to watching this too.
Excellent. Thank you Mr Eck.

No I didn't. I was working from 7am to about 10pm. Not that i'm complaining, what I did yesterday is a privilege afforded to relatively few.(more if the same today too)
I will watch it though. It's just breathtakingly good. what was last night's subject?

Was a great show, watching it my Dad suddenly asked why do those tribesmen not get poisoned after eating the monkeys they've shot with curare?
I ended up having to google it - curare is not poisonous when eaten, only when it directly enters the blood.
