That reminds me!  Did you watch the Brian Cox "Night with the Stars" that was on at the weekend?

It's on iPlayer if you missed it:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b018nn7l/A_Night_with_the_Stars/

Well worth a watch, and just love the bit about the Pauli Principle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauli_exclusion_principle) and Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncertainty_principle) and just wish my physics teachers had been half as interesting as Coxy.

No. I missed it, but thanks for letting me know.

I've taken to adjourning to the bedroom with my lappy while the girls are watching tripe on the telly. While I'm in exile, I usually fire up an MTT and watch something on iplayer.

After fifty-odd years of tying my own shoelaces, someone told me yesterday that I'm doing it wrong.

Actually, he made a very good case, and gave me a practical demonstration.

I have no Idea how to explain it in text, but if any of you want to remind me when we next meet, I'll show you.

Is this the actual tying of the laces or the lacing up of the shoe/boot?

I ask as I have a couple of not-so-interesting anecdotes to this.

I was taught that lacing up of boots ahould never be done in the criss cross fashion, also hard to explain in text that you would use one end only to thread up the boot (eyeleted boots only) the reason being that it was more difficult for someone to cut through the criss cross of laces in the need of emergency removal.

Have also heard a few tales concerning Ghurkas sneaking up on postions in the dark and identifying friend or foe by running their fingers up and down the lacing, if not done in the British way, generally you'd get your throat cut. Probably romanticised but I love the thought that this could be true.

I was talking about  tying Geo, but as you've mentioned the actual lacing up, I have to say I can't be doing with the 'one end only' method. I'm strictly a criss cross man. (I'm a bit worried about Ghurkas now though).

I love how you have an anecdote for almost everything. What an interesting life you must have led.

An infinite number of chimps could produce the works of Shakespeare though, could Kin and Deno do that?

Talking of boots,

The picture from the series that Tonji linked to in TK's diary and the soldier shaving using his helmet as a shaving bowl sits uneasily with me. There is just something that feels unright about it. Haven't cracked it yet..................

The boots he is wearing almost look to be skiing boots and the other guy seems similar. Not sure if that type of boot was available then. The other alternative is that they have the "hook" type fasteners as in the top half of the Cebee boots in my walking thread. Again I'm not convinced that type of fastener was available back then.

Thats what led me to the dogface link I posted on TK's diary as I have been searching for any pics of wartime uniform and specifically boots to try to match them.

The pic looks to "clean" if that makes any sense.

I will keep searching and report back.

Yeah, but I think those beeswax shoe-polish sticks have a leather softener in there as well, which wouldn't suit my purpose.

Local shop finder is a good idea though.

The internet is like evolution on fast forward. I mean, imagine a troupe of chimps.....

Hold on, I have to digress here....

I wasn't sure I was spelling 'troupe' correctly, so I googled it. Now I don't know if it should be 'troupe' 'troup' or 'troop', and anyway, the collective name for chimps is 'a cartload'.

Anyway. Imagine a cartload of chimps. One finds out how to crack a Brazil nut using a stone, but other chimps from outside his group don't learn from him how to do it. It could take a million years for all chimps to learn to crack Brazil nuts.

Contrast those chimps with Boshi & Deno. They learn something, and I know about it within minutes.
After reading this i went off you tubing chimps and tool use (funny how suggestion makes us do stuff) the chimps are very clever obv but this clip surprised me a bit, a pigeon doing the classic banana and box.
Bird brains eh.
