Nope, can't find anything like it.

It wasn't a cannister though, it was a pipe sunk into the ground.

Yeah the pipe/canister is sunk into the run to release gas/poison and the main burrows blocked off.

I cleared the deadwood and found the rabbit, but I also found this....

It's like a pipe with a cap which is padlocked on in a peculiar fashion.

Does anyone have any idea what it is? I'm completely stumped.

is there a quarry or mine near? as they may be for gas or vibration testing.

Yes. There is indeed. Croft quarry is only a few 100 meters away. I think you may be on to something....
