Guess where I've been today.....

Give in?  Right. I'll tell you.

I've been in the crypts and tunnels under Derby Cathedral.

I took a surreptitious pic with my phone, but I don't know if you will be able to see much when I upload it. It was as black a charlatan's heart down there.

Who with and why?

Who with - The bloke that looks after the place. A sort of ecclesiastical version of a janitor. A Verger possibly? (Remember the Reverend Timothy Farthing from Dad's Army? Well he had a sidekick. Whatever he was, I was with one of them).

Why- We're putting on a little exhibition for Holocaust Remembrance Day and we were looking for some display stands.

The pic didn't come out, but this is one I took from one of the tunnels that lead to the crypt. They're really tiny. A tall man would have to stoop.

This is the view looking back towards the only light source, two dim bulbs and the open door of a little office by which we entered.

I've read a lot on the Holocaust but never heard of this week.

13/06/1938: The start of Gypsy Clean-up Week

On 13 June 1938 German police began a week of operations against Gypsies in Germany. By 18 June over 1,000 Roma and Sinti had been arrested and deported to concentration camps. What has now become known as ‘Gypsy Clean-up Week’ was the beginning of an increasingly radical programme against Gypsies that led ultimately to their mass murder in Nazi death camps.

The impetus for the ‘clean-up’ action against the Gypsies had come from the Decree on the Fight to Prevent Crime, a 1937 law enacted by the Nazis. Both in Imperial and Weimar Germany, Gypsies had often been the victims of legal persecution. They were attacked for their itinerant way of living that did not conform to German ideals, and of being prone to criminal activities. After the Nazis came to power in 1933 Gypsies were subject to a host of restrictions that targeted ‘asocial’ groups. As part of the 1937 Decree, they were forced to register permanent addresses. Failure to do so or migration from a registered address was under penalty of arrest and deportation to concentration camps.

In fact some of the Gypsies arrested during the ‘clean-up’ week had complied with laws imposed on them; they were arrested simply to demonstrate a tough stance on the part of local police. Many would later be murdered as the Nazi pursuit of Roma and Sinti population spread across Europe. In Germany, several months after Gypsy Clean-up Week in June 1938, the Nazis arrested and deported over 30,000 Jews during Kristallnacht. For both Jews and Gypsies, the year 1938 witnessed a major escalation of violence against them in Germany – to such an extent that it may be seen as a point of no return on the path to the Nazi extermination programme.

Tom - you may know this, but Derby Cathedral has it's own little colony (?) of Peregrine Falcons.

By a really peculiar quirk of fate, (friend of a friend, small world thing), I was sent some photos of them by a Gent was was giving me some advice about cameras, & photography. Even more spookily, they are on a site owned by a blonde - Mr Stephen Kirk, aka "birdforum".

I'll try & find them & if I do, I'll Post them here. I'm good at posting photos, see?

Here's one of several of the photos I mentioned, which have copyright of a lovely & most helpful chap called Andy Byron, who MereGeek sort of introduced to me.

The photo had this text.....

This is the other peregrine fledgling on the top of the cathedral bell tower, waiting for the adult to hand over its supper.

How odd. Is there some sort of weird affinity between Cathedrals & Peregrine Falcons?

Until very recently, there was no  acknowledgement of what happened to the Gypsies under the Nazi regime Kev, despite the fact that we lost a larger percentage of our people than any other single group. (over 80%).

I wrote a bit about it here a couple of years ago.

We've got a nesting pair of Peregrine falcons at Croft quarry. (Keep it too yourself, don't want people twitching all over the place)

I was going to take Tony to see them, but he didn't have a coat.
