Yes I've seen them on lots of birds Ralph, usually when I was putting a ring on a wild caught bird that was supposed to be aviary bred and closed-rung.

The caption to that photo says that they are pads used for grip but that's not quite right, they're not pads as such, but rather celluloses, areas of thick protective skin like you and I would get on our feet (or hands if we were ever to do any actual work).

They are much less evident in caged birds.

I'm sooooo tempted to use your wisdom to educate the masses on Twitter who I'm sure thought they were little suction pads, as of course did I.

Or of course you could go on there and take a look yourself. You can do that without signing up and that Carl Bovis chap has some stunning photos both there and on his website.

They are definitely not suction pads but they are more pronounced than I've seen on other birds and we can't say they don't help with grip can we?

What a nightmare for any parent. I'm hoping for a good outcome but I fear the worst.

I don't think I realised until yesterday that a public school is actually a private school.

Now I know this is a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but how much on average does it cost to send a child to a public school?

£17k per year is apparently the average Tom. A few localish ones - £13k at Leicester Grammar, £20k at Oakham, £22k at Rugby, £26k at Uppingham.

Plus trips, uniform, exams etc.

If boarding, £15-20k on top.

Woof! No wonder they didn't sent me.

Well, that and the fact that they needed me to knock on doors and ask for old scrap iron & rags.

Now I am cofused.  Eton is definitely a public school, but I wouldn't say Leicester Grammer was.   Wikipedia disagrees with me.

Can probably find examples of 'Grammar' schools that fit every possible definition of school; public non-selective, public selective, public, academy etc. etc.
