Mrs Red reckons she heard one a couple of days ago but I haven't heard one for about 5 years now.

I had a spell a few years ago when I didn't hear one but last few years there's been one or two about

Gordon passed away recently. He was a great man and he put a huge amount of effort into finding, renovating and preserving his collection.
Here's a photograph of my mam and dad sitting on the front of one of Gordon's 'open lot' wagons.

The internet doesn't know everything.

I asked the lady who runs my local sewing circle - sent her a picture by phone (that's on Blonde somewhere too) and she says they are just embellishments for handkerchiefs to sew on at will. They are all the same letter as it's assumed that you only had one special person in your life with that initial and they were really quite an expensive and lazy add on - anyone with a needle and a bit of practice could easily just sew an initial on without buying an embellishment. Also back in the day, special handkerchiefs were usually sold in boxes of three, so this box would have made 4 sets.

Suddently it is clear. I think we used to have hankies with first iniitial in the corner when I was a child (I am much surer that my mum did, but think I must have done too). I am fairly sure it was in the style used in the picture, though that may be wrong. It did look familiar, but I couldn't place it. It may be the case that she bought hankies with the initial already sown on, as I have a recollection that only the initial was prominent and not a circle, but maybe she sewed the initial on herself?
I'll ask her next time I speak to her.

I couldn't remember the short name for handkerchiefs! Thank you Doobs. I asked my mum once when I was little what hankies were, she said they were wot posh people blow thar noses on, and that in my little real world was what made the difference between posh and poor, they had hankies, we had sleeves!
