I set about clearing up the land. I weighed the scrap cars in and I shifted several lorry loads of assorted rubbish that was just lying about the place. Putting in the access track and hard standing was straightforward enough, but slow and time consuming, real donkey work.

Getting an electricity and water supply on to the property would have been a doddle, for someone who had just won the lottery that is. The ‘leccy board wanted to charge me a fortune. I asked one of their blokes if it was possible to reduce the cost if I were to dig the trench myself and supply and lay my own cable. He told me it would be much cheaper if I were to do that, but I would only be allowed to work up to my own boundary. He also warned that the work would be inspected, to ensure that it conformed to their exacting standards.

I asked the water board the same question and received, more or less, the same answer. The only difference being that the water supply had to cross the stream that runs alongside my field.

The chap from the water board was a very nice, approachable sort of fellow, and he explained to me that it was extraordinarily expensive for them to bring a water supply across a stream. They first had to install a steel pipe, which itself had to be set into concrete foundations on ether side, and then they could pass the plastic water pipe through.

“But there is already a steel pipe crossing the stream” I pointed out. “There it is look, why can’t you use that?”
“We wouldn’t be allowed” He replied with a shake of his head. “We don’t know what’s inside there, and we have no authority to touch it.”
“What if” I ventured, “you were to come back tomorrow, and find that my water pipe had already been put through that steel pipe, and one end of it was just lying there waiting for you to connect it?”
“In that case”, He grinned, “How it got through there would be none of our business”.

Red i would like you to stop everything you are doing and spend your full time updating blonde with stories  from your life.  I could read it all day and therefore i think its only fair that you put me and the others on this forum first.

Keep it up!

Red, I like everyone else here just love to read your tales of life so much. As I read I get this image in my head of "The Last of the Summer Wine" (thats a compliment by the way  Wink )

What with "mobile homes" Sky Tv, Internet etc, do you prefer your lifestyle nowadays or do you feel you are being dragged along to conform with the "norm" ?

Modernisation is a slow process Taxi, it creeps up on you. Suddenly you find that you can't do without something that you never even had for most of your life.

Sometimes, (often) I do get nostalgic for the old days and simpler times, but like most people, I tent to remember the good things and forget the bad.

You couldn't talk to as many live-minded people though pre t'interweb.  You were stuck with work colleagues, or people from your immediate social circle.  Not many of them would be interested in any poker-related stories that's for sure.
