I read a fantastic article on this recent about giving up (anything), and how just before you break the cycle, you are programmed to have "one last go" of whatever, with food its obviously a massive binge. Avoiding this pre programmed cycle is the key (before anyone goes 2+2 = 2324552498, the book was nothing to do with addiction or anything, it was called, "you are not as clever as you think you are" and it was one of the last chapters) - my comments here are paraphrasing obv

So - MR Dog - you are programmed to do this.

Interestingly, the "solution" was in reward - a path which I know Simon Galloway follows with great success. So along your journey of giving up something, reward yourself at predetermined milestones! This helps prevent this "final blow out" matter

Dont know if this help

If you're saying it's not my fault then yes, it help.

So there I was, dieting away nicely. I lost a stone in the first month or so, everyone was saying how well I was doing...

Then I got stuck, and didn't lose anything for a couple of weeks, so I decided it was time to make a really big effort. Then, a strange thing happened.

One afternoon about 10 days or so ago, I suddenly just sort of found myself in the kitchen eating cheese on toast. I couldn't tell you how it came about, I have no recollection of deciding to do it, it was as if I was being controlled by some outside force.

After the cheese on toast I ate a whole packet of custard creams, a microwave cottage pie, a bag of roast chicken flavour crisps and a whole bar of dark chocolate.

In the back of my mind I knew it was wrong but I didn't care about the consequences, I was just totally out of control.

Eventually I was so full I felt physically sick.

When I thought about it afterwards, it was like it wasn't really me that did it but some strange evil alter ego that I had no control over. What a strange episode.

Anyway, I shrugged it off and went back to dieting properly.

A couple of days later, while I was playing the cash game at DTD, it happened again. I saw someone eating a tuna melt and before I knew it I was asking the valet to bring me one. When it came I realised that I hadn't ordered a drink so I asked for a diet coke.

By the time she came back with the coke I'd eaten the tuna melt, so I ordered a full English breakfast, (With an extra egg)

After that I had a bowl of chips (I kid you not) and an enormous piece of chocolate fudge cake with ice cream.

Last night, after dieting properly for several days, it happened again and I ate about £30 worth of stuff from the DTD menu.

I have no Idea what's causing it, I just seem to be totally driven by a sense of rebellion.

Writing it down, it seems kind of comical, but I mean WTF? Have I gone loopy or something?

Morning Tom.

I really am very surprised by this, it is not at all like you.

Hard to know what to think. You can ascribe all sorts of weird & wonderful theories to the how, what & why, but it's "fail" really, however you look at it, & there is no point looking for solace or hiding behind fancy-pancy bollox psychological theories.

The only think I know is that, in your case, if you want to lose weight bad enough, you will, & do so efficiently.

Perhaps therein lies the answer - in reality, deep down, you are fine with your current physique.

PS - Note the interesting interpretation of the word physique.

Week 5 Progress Report.

Am completely in the groove now, it is just patience & discipline from now on. Pretty boring really, same, same, which is where this thread helps, because I don't want to be seen to fail.

So far, 35 days have elapsed & 17lbs shed, so roughly 0.5lbs per day, which is about right for the early stages when we start badly overweight. The moving average will drop to around 1lb per week very shortly, though I may just manage a week or two @ 1.5lbs first.

The Month Two Target was a loss of 7lbs, & after Week One, 2lbs had gone, so we are on target, though the next 5lbs will take some shifting.

I plan to continue as at present, with two changes.

1) Drink a LOT more fluid.

2) Exercise a LOT more. This may mean increasing my calorie intake, to provide the fuel, but providing calorie burn exceeds calorie intake, it's all fine & jolly.

I do feel, physically, a little better in myself, no more heartburn, & clothes fit better already. The headaches continue, but they are not diet related. Mentally I feel better than I have in many months.

Getting there.

Ha, yes, I DO enjoy it.

It is a terrific mental challenge, all day & every day we are faced with temptation, & resisting that temptation is incredibly satisfying. My cupboard is still stacked with lots of lovely cakes & Fray Bentos pies (they are the nuts) & I get a good feeling that I can resist them all with ease.

I'm never happier than when I am on a diet, I feel SO good.

The flipside is as soon as I reach my target, I then binge eat on all the bad things, start to feel unwell, & off we go again.

I've been on that cycle for over 30 years now, every year bar two or three I have had to diet for 3 months in the spring. Never once failed to meet my target, never once failed to pile it all back on again in the next 9 months.

You'd think I would have learned to be sensible by now. Fat chance.

No chance!

The day the Diet ends, it will be Fray Bentos Frenzy. First, a Pie, then a S & K pudding, with new potatoes, marrowfat peas, & thick gravy. Two sticky buns for afters.

I've just been sporadic in paying attention to things of late, sensible few days then have a couple days where I'm not as strict and then fire a McDonalds in or a pack of flapjacks while watching Channel 4 racing etc.

I've still to dig my digital scales out since we moved and I did have an interesting conversation with mum about the bathroom scales. It turns out they don't work properly, the numbers are around 4lbs out and not the right way either. I asked why we still had them if they don't work and she replied that they are for show Cheesy

You couldn't make it up, you really couldn't, so my starting weight was actually around 235lbs, regardless I'll weigh myself on proper scales Monday morning once they're located and climb back on the bike for a proper assault.

Then it's lattes and sticky buns with Tikay in Vegas Wink

I feel like everyone has abandoned me!

Still here Tikay, just non stop work last 4 days.
Was sooo busy yesterday never had time for a break, or dinner, eaten sod all past few days.

I only do 'official' weigh in weekly, but have been on scales everyday. Been smashing it this week. Monday is weigh in day so will find out then.

Like Lee I love Easter eggs and we have loads at home as bought em for all the family last week. Good news is they are all still there...atm!!!

I used to do my weigh-ins weekly. What a moment, when dieting hard, & you step on those scales, hoping to see a decent weight loss.....afterwards, great elation, or utter disappointment.

Here's to elation.
