Daily Report, as @ 08:30, Monday July 23rd

In The Open, Fred indulged in a botched session of sado-masochism when he tried to punish Ladbrokes and ended up strapped (for cash) himself. Our two runners McDowell and Snedeker were so close to getting the job done but Tiger spoiled the party. Congratulations to Ernie Els and commiserations to Adam Scott.

Jason Kokrak was nowhere to be seen in the True South Classic in America.

In the Test match South Africa dominated England in every respect. They declared 250 ahead and reduced England to 102/4. Fred's bet on Amla (endorsed by Tighty) came in big time stylee when he scored 311 not out.

Bradley Wiggins completed his Tour De France victory becoming the first Brit ever to win the event. He is now a firm favourite for SPOTY.

Lewis Hamilton had an unfortunate German Grand Prix. Jensen Button made the podium for rubz.

What's coming up?

It's a quiet day on the sporting front.

The Hull derby in Super League should provide some entertainment.

The World Matchplay Darts continues today.

The first test concludes and England have very little chance of getting out of it with a draw. Those who laid the draw will find some consolation.

It's 4 days until the start of the Olympics.

I liked McDowell yesterday and on Friday and I've played pretty big but at 4/1 and 1/5th 1,2,3 he is not one I am pressing on. It could be argued that 4/5 a place is decewnt value and I wouldn't argue. The whole book is overbroke for a place and these guys are all value on that half of the bet. It should probably be shorter in that respect but I'm happy with my position.

I could see the argument for Oleson. He is a decent prospect and he impressed yesterday playing with Tiger. At 80/1 you are getting 16/1 a place which is probably good and you are only giving up a small bit of equity on the win bet. Wouldn't put you off.

The two I played smallish today were Els and Johnson. Sure I know that Els is not the player he was, the putter lets him down and he may even be a bottler these days. 5/1 a place is a very good bet though. He can shoot 64/65/66  and win this, I don't mind the win bet too much, it's only 27/1 on Betfair. I think the place part is great though. Should be about 3/1.

I prefer Zach Johnson as a player though. He did well yesterday and I think he's more of a winner these days. Betfair have him 29/1 to win so you are giving up a little more on the win but again I think 7/2 would be about right the place with no overound.

You should now work out today's very strong bet by a process of elimination...

Thanks for this.
Enjoyed the analysis, and got on Els and Johnson.
I was digging big holes on a daily basis, until the Sunday, so was a relief to get out of it.

Thanks Vince.

We tried every which way on the Golf, & just kept digging a bigger hole! Fun though, great fun, & we were pretty close to a couple of returns.

GREAT cricket bet on Amla though, spectacular.

What do you think of the "correctness" of his technique?

The results speak for themself, but I was always taught that batting was about getting the feet into pposition, but he seems to be glued to the spot. Cricket's answer to Furyk's golf swing, I guess. All wrong, but it does the job.

Trescothick used to be like that. Give me bell's technique every day (warks fan...) but Amla's patience is reminiscent of Dravid. Would still be there now, I imagine.

How does anyone ever get him out?

Great humility in his interview afterwards, too.

Rugby League Hull KR v Hull tonight.

Hull KR are in much better form than Hull and have home advantage tonight. There is not much to be won by backing them at odds on to win and I can't be siding with Hull as they have injury problems and their coach has announced they will be trying something different tonight to get out of their slump. As it is a local derby this in itself will be enough to get them competing. With the fine weather there should be a few tries scored and it is tempting to go for Hull KR to win by over 12 points but they have only managed to do that against dreadfull teams.

So this looks like a game that Hull KR will win but by 12 points or less.

Recommend Hull KR to win by 1-12 points £20 @ 15/8 Ladbrokes.

Anyone else think that's a bit short? There is a lot of competition in both events and he has struggled for the last few months. I expect him to be ready but he will be under a lot of pressure to start well.

Can you get markets on forecasts (eg Bolt/Blake 1-2) for this sort of thing?

Note for MereNovice to check

T20 Qtrs tomorrow Somerset v Essex

Good weather

Taunton a small ground, very six friendly

Two big hitting teams..Compton, Hildreth, Napier, Ten Doeschate etc

edit, Bopara available too

http://www.oddschecker.com/cricket/domestic/friends-life-t20/somerset-v-essex/total-6s

Looking to have the overs on sixes if the quote is no higher than 10, when it comes up.

T20 Group matches at Taunton

1 six sixes, 120 scored only   bad weather
2 nine sixes, 140 chased down ok weather
3 ten sixes, 180 chased down good weather
4 two sixes, 140 chased down bad weather
5 rained off
6 ten sixes, 190 highest innings good weather

If we plug in good weather, and score of 170+ up front, we should get >10 with these two teams.

Not a thread bet, but for those interested

Jermaine Beckford is the favourite to be the Championship's top scorer next season (with Bet Victor).

http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/championship/top-goalscorer

It's a huge lay

He's far from a certainty to be in the Championship all season (West Ham), he's not the type of player Pearson likes (ego, selfish) and a fall out could happen at any time

Much better value in Doyle, Rhodes.

Some comedy prices in those lists. Any mileage in Kevin Davies at 25/1?

Well he's stayed, signed a new contract and Bolton have kept their team together....

Very trappy division, and trappy market for sure

Just don't fancy a runaway team in it this year
