President Trump was spanked by his porn star mistress with a rolled-up copy of Forbes magazine featuring him on the cover https://t.co/zF04HxmIgh

One of the people present at the infamous meeting where Trump gave his opinion on certain countries was the new Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen. She happened to be before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. When asked about it by several Senators, she claimed she hadn't heard what was said due to crosstalk, didn't remember specific words, etc.

Cory Booker is a new (ie junior) member on the Committee, and had listened to her avoiding the questions of several members before he got a turn. He basically just made a speech at her rather than asking her questions, letting out his frustration at her evasion and, more or less, saying she was lying, without using that word. He said that he had been in the Oval Office several times when Obama was there, making the point that you focus on everything the Presidrnt says, not come out saying that you don't remember. "When the Commander-in-Chief speaks, I listen. I don't have amnesia....Your silence and your amnesia is complicity." In later TV interviews, he did accuse her of lying under oath to the Senate Committee.

In case you missed it, this was the climax:

If you have time, the whole thing is powerful, albeit that there may be a bit of grandstanding. Booker was considered by Clinton for running mate and is widely expected to take a shot at 2020 himself. No-one doubts that he genuinely feels passionately about race issues, but he may also have taken an opportunity for widespread favourable publicity.

Unbelievable. The White House switchboard isn't taking calls.

Instead, there is a message saying that the government is shut down and it's all the Democrats' fault:

Don’t really get why it’s unbelievable. I’d be more surprised if he didn’t use these types of opportunities to blame the democrats given we know what he’s like.

It thought nothing of it when I agreed with you earlier, I also agree with this. Starting to look like real stats outlier. Three in a row really would be something!

Some people see only the negatives, but President Trump has presided over the greatest year ever for the roaring US economy, which is breaking records in every direction.

What is his greatest achievement?

- Unemployment reduced from 4.8% at inauguration to 4.1%, just above the lowest-ever level (3.9%)
- Black unemployment is at its lowest ever level (Dec 18: 6.8%)
- Stock market at record level - up more than 31% to 26,071 from 19,827 on Inauguration Day
- Economic growth 3.1% and 3.2% for Q2 and Q3 (Q4 not out yet). 2016 overall was 1.5%. Obama's best year was 2.9%, though he did have some better Quarters.
- 1.8 million new jobs created
- Corporate profits up by 10.1%
- Home prices up by 8.8%
- ISIS crushed
- Border crossing arrests down 48%

Which of Trump's policies do we think has led to this?

Very little.  We are always down on Trump so, for balance, I thought I'd list some of the main achievements they are claiming, without qualification.

However, you are absolutely right - they have over-claimed massively for a mediocre economic performance. Most of the outcomes listed result from continuation of trends under Obama and/or world economic trends, where most economies have benefitted from a worldwide boom (with the notable exception of Britain post Brexit vote). Unemployment was already in decline and wage levels have been flat (a contradiction in low-unemployment times). Job creation is actually down - 1.8m is the least number of jobs created since 2010.

The extraordinary stock market growth has been a worldwide event. The UK was the only major stock market to underperform, Germany came in similar to the Dow, and they were all outstripped by the Hang Seng and Nikkei. The pickup in the Dow increase since Christmas can legitimately be credited to the tax reductions.

Trump made reducing the trade deficit a priority in the campaign, but has made no impact. In fact, it has risen to its highest level since 2008.

Border arrests (a good indicator of illegal crossing attempts) have been falling dramatically over the years, from 1.6m in 2000 to 416k in 2016. The reduction in 2017 is undoubtedly due to fears of less sympathetic treatment, but it is exaggerated as 2016 was actually an increase on 2015, as Central Americans (as opposed to Mexicans) tried to get in before it became harder. So, most of the work had already been done and it wasn't that hard to force a dip so they could claim the lowest annual total. The Trump effect actually started reversing part-way through the year and 2018 is expected to come in higher than recent years, again due to Central Americans, not Mexicans.

All-in-all, they haven't actually achieved much.
