Great tributes here in this link.   He was my first memory of cricket on the tv at school at lunchtime watching him steaming in off his huge run up to bowl.   Very underrated operator by a lot of people in the game for me around the hype of Beefy and Gower.  RIP Bob.

Some lovely articles here about Jim.

He was in the same class as my dad at Hartley Brook School, Shiregreen in Sheffield.

Very humble beginnings. Lovely bloke.

RIP.

Peter Snell, the only man in the last 100 years to win the 800m and 1500m at the same Olympics (he won the 800m twice).

Snell broke several world records, including three in eight days, and two of them (800m and 1000m) are still New Zealand national records over 50 years later, never equalled by John Walker or anyone since, despite them running on modern tracks. His 1:44.3 for the 800m was probably his greatest achievement. 57 years later, it is the oldest national record recognised by the IAAF and it's still the world record for an 800m run on grass. His time would have won several Olympic finals since - it was more than a second faster than both Dave Wottle and Steve Ovett when they won their golds in the same event, and would have won at Athens in 2000 and Beijing in 2004 (42 years later). It would have placed him sixth in the 2016 Olympic final in Rio. And.....it was run on grass. In 1962.

He may not be as well remembered as them, but Snell was named New Zealand Sports Champion of the Century, ahead of all the rugby players, John Walker, Richard Hadlee, Mark Todd, etc.
