Apparently BVB just liked the atmosphere the song created in the stadium so started singing it.

It's also sung at a few other German clubs. No real specific link to Liverpool (it is a broadway song originally of course) which is probably why the announcer explained the context of Hillsborough before the game last week.

It was from Carousel (Rodgers and Hammerstein musical) but then Gerry and the Pacemakers (a Liverpool band) covered it in 1963. At Anfield at that time they'd do the Top 10 countdown before games and then play the number 1. You'll Never Walk Alone was number one for a while, and so it became a bit of a favourite. So much so that the fans continued to sing it long after it was no longer number 1.

The rest, as they say, is history.

We heard celtic fans sing it and we nicked it. Like we have continued to with their songs to this day.

Just goes to show the danger of these teams around this time - really hope we respect Norwich and do the business tomorrow!

Can't believe this is really happening...

YNWA started after the Uefa Cup final in Germany a few years ago - 2001. Liverpool fans sang it for an hour after the final whistle and it made the papers the next day. In 2003 Celtic went over in another tie and the club they were facing sang it back to them (can't remember who now).

Some older LFC fans I know say it started in the 70s but unconfirmed.

I remember YNWA being a thing before 2001 like.

Started in the 60s I'd imagine.

I'm taking the bait i know. YNWA was first sung on the kop in the sixties. And has been done at every home game since.
