Flight would be my choice.
Internet, smart phones, nuclear power, modern medicine are all huge advances and mostly more recent, but I suspect 17th century man would still find planes/spacecraft as more astonishing?
Tikay did you ever imagine television, planes, antibiotics etc. when you were a lad?

First hot air balloons were in the 18th century - doesn't seem too much of a leap to imagine other forms of flight from that I would have thought

I'm delighted to see the extra traffic here, but I wonder at what point His Tom-Ness will realise what diary he is posting on?
Just another balls up in a veritable litany of recent and ever more frequent balls ups.
Yes, a reply has flooded in and lost me my bet. (I said smart phones would be first up)

You were very close, it was my first thought, but I changed my mind. I thought I was only thinking that as I knew it was invented more recently, and I have had way more time to get used to it. 17th century man wouldn't have that context. He may also be more impressed with television, or a big screen, as he may think they are more impressive looking than a smartphone.
What was on your shortlist?

I will post my shortlist later.
I dig where you are coming from but I disagree because I think that they would probably imagine flight but never the smartphone. Hell, I couldn't have imagined a smartphone in 1975.

da Vinci was imagining flight in the 16th Century.
But i would imagine he sketched it on his tablet.

Ah, it was 18th century. Dare say your average 18th century man proceeded hot air balloons and of those that didn't, almost all would have been unaware of them.
I did think of Da Vinci, but dare say most 18th century men were just concerned with getting enough food to feed them and their families and making sure their families had a roof over their head was much of what they worried about. Dare say Da Vinci's drawings weren't on the radar for them.
I think a huge chunks of what we see now would be mind blowing to them, so guessing which particular thing is most mindblowing is very hard to say.

Nothing beats a good business story, & this one promises to be a corker.
2 days ago, everything seemed to be tickity-boo, but now, Sticky Bun specialists Patisserie Valerie appear to be in a whole heap of trouble.
Snippets include;
The owner of Patisserie Valerie has said the cafe chain needs "an immediate injection of capital" to continue trading in its current form.
The stark statement to investors comes after the firm uncovered "significant, and potentially fraudulent, accounting irregularities".
It also belatedly discovered HMRC filed a winding-up petition against one of its principal subsidiaries in September and is seeking £1.14m in taxes.
In its most recent results statement in May, the firm said it had cash reserves of £28.8m.

Ha, no, I'd think that's very unlikely, Wombwell is more likely Greggs heartland.
I'm suddenly reminded - with a shudder - of Monckton Coke & Chemical works. Jeez, that was proper industry.
