Tom,

Left-field question for you.

Why are so many dogs unsettled or scared by vacuum cleaners?

I was reminded of it by this Tweet.....

 https://twitter.com/TheOwenMyers/status/1182619748309356547

A small percentage of dogs are scared of vacuum cleaners, mostly the puppy farm ones that were born in sheds or barns and then didn't sell quickly so spent some very important months without being socialised or acclimatised to everyday things.

Puppies need to be safely exposed to as many things as possible in their first few months of life and thankfully, most are.

That being said, A large percentage of dogs don't particularly like vacuum cleaners, which is a completely different thing. Vacuum cleaners make a lot of noise, (Including a goodly amount that is beyond our hearing range) and they move in unpredictable and dangerous ways.

I hate it when Mrs Red or the girls are vacuuming, I can't hear the stuff that I want to hear and I get chivvied around the room so, more often than not, I make myself scarce.

I suspect most other men are the same.

Do you never vacuum at all?   Like if you are on your own, come in from a wet day, cover the carpet with mud and leaves, do you just leave it there?  I tend to do the vacuuming as Mrs Doobs doesn't do picking up stuff well.

Edit, mayo on fish fingers

Mrs Red, like most Gypsy women, is OTT when it comes to cleaning so I take my shoes off at the door = no mud and leaves.

That said, like all men I can't help but make a mess so she tidies around after me, gently nagging as she goes.

When I'm home alone for a day I make a special effort to keep things in good order but when I'm alone for a week or more I know it's a lost cause so I just let the mess and washing up accumulate and then do it all just before she comes home.

That's about the only time I use the Hoover. My family is all girls so not much call for it really.

Mayo? Weirdo!

I like sweet chili ketchup on my fish-fingers.

Mayo goes quite well with chips and is de rigueur in Holland and probably several other countries too.

PS Did anyone watch "The Dangerous Mr Baker" last night on BBC4?

It's a tremendous documentary about the life and times of Ginger Baker and I strongly recommend it.

Yes, Mrs Red caught the mayo on chips bug in the Netherlands. She's a weirdo too

It's a tremendous documentary about the life and times of Ginger Baker and I strongly recommend it.

I had watched it again a week or so earlier, before he passed away after I heard he was at the final departure lounge so to speak, as I have it on "tape" (or whatever the Sky Box is called). Think I may have recommended in the TADLF thread.

A most unusual rockumentary, & a very enjoyable watch.

I have so many rockumentaries & I seem to be able to watch them again & again. I don't need to like the subject to be able to enjoy them.

Last night's watch was "A Film About Life, Sex & Supermarkets" which was the story of Pulp, their backstory & centred on their farewell tour, most especially the final gig in Sheffield. Another very quirky rockumentary or, if you prefer, popumentary.

It's mostly filmed in Sheffield (Jarvis's home town) & includes vox pops with all sorts of elderly locals, including the 2 pictured, one of whom was pretty sure that Jarvis Cocker was Joe Cocker's son. (Presumably because both are from Sheffield).

Here's a 2 minute taster of it. The elderly plump-faced gent is a newspaper vendor in Sheffield & of course Pulp fan.

Here's the two old lovelies who thought Jarvis was Joe's son;

^^^^^

I don't mean to be rude but I always thought Pulp were a bit naff - I'm sure Mr Baker would agree with me in no uncertain terms.

Jarvis's dad Joe on the other hand I've always adored from the first time I heard him and presumed he was a black guy.

Well I would not disagree at all, as I said above, I don't need to like the subject of music docs to be able to enjoy them, & I'm certainly no fan of Pulp. I may have a soft-spot for Candida in her double-knits, mind. Not your usual pop musician at all.

Same applies to Ginger Baker, I like neither his music or him, more so (less so?) after watching Beware of Mr Baker. Still enjoyed it immensely though. I can easily picture Ginger hitting Jarvis across the face with his walking stick.

If I had to choose between Ginger Baker & Pulp, I'd go for the latter every time, but let's hope I never do. It's all so subjective, & that's just great.

Here's Candida. Notice her hands - she's been suffering from arthritis since she was 16, so over 40 years.

Thanks for the heads up; Pulp really were the most entertaining band.   Saw them one afternoon at Glastonbury followed straight after by Oasis.   Saw them the next year with both headlining the main stage.   I much preferred Pulp live.   They did sorted for Es and Whizz and it seemed magical.   Smashed the encore with Common People.  They also headlined a gig in a park in Warrington around that time, sure it must have been a match for Knobworth with the Gallagher brothers.  I think I had a real soft spot as they were one of the few bands I followed from early on that made it big, and it was a long time before they did (Oasis was way quicker).   They changed their sound quite a lot in that time.   They used to have a great track early doors called My Legendary Girlfriend which I loved.

Jarvis is such a great wordsmith too.

Need to watch this later, may bring back all the memories.  Maybe search out My Legendary Girlfriend first.

Good stuff. If you are a Pulp fan, I'd be very surprised if you don't enjoy it. Lots of good no-nonsense interviews with the band members, plenty of good chat from Jarvis, & some real earthy Sheffield stuff. And a fan that travelled all the way from Chicago just to see the final concert.

Here's My Legendary Girlfriend.

I really must stop fouling up Tom's Cup of Tea & a Cross-Threaded Screw Diary. Maybe there's another Diary I could use.

I stumbled across it on Amazon Prime Tony. It may be available elsewhere though.
