I'm in a lay-by somewhere near Rotterdam, there are loads like this, you can park anytime for free. There are trees and grass, picnic tables and toilets. There is no litter, and the toilets haven't been vandalised.

Mrs Red is asleep in the back of the van, and I'm sitting in the front, browsing blonde. Next to my window is a sign which reads "HIER GRATIS INTERNET courtesy of Texaco".

Amazin innit?

Mrs Red is now awake, sitting in the darkness, earnestly explaining to an invisible mosquito how slim his chances of ever becoming a father are if he doesn't quickly vacate the premises.

Accidentally caught this once every 5 years festival in Amsterdam, then somehow found ourselves afloat alongside hundreds of other ships and boats. Unfortunately, ours was skippered by a mad man.

It was all OK in the end, but a bit unnerving when he set the throttles on both engines to full ahead, then let go the wheel and went aft to remonstrate with someone who's vessel we had just bounced off.

The girls know that I don't read fiction, but they asked me to make an exception and gave me a copy of this to take with me on my hols.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Curious-Incident-Dog-Night-time/dp/0099450259

I Highly recommend it.

Anyone else read it btw?

Yes, it's very good.

If you like your books short and hilarious, I'd recommend (former Simpsons writer) John Swartzwelder's "How I Conquered Your Planet" or "The Exploding Detective"  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Exploding-Detective-John-Swartzwelder/dp/0975579967/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_1
