Goldman Sachs bought 1% of facebook, and when they wanted to do so Zuckerberg and team told GS to make them an offer. It's privately traded after all

GS settled on $500m. For 1%. Hence the notional value now implied.

Bonkers, really.

Why did GS want 1%? to get the corporate business when facebook (once it matures) starts hoovering up other social media businesses (which will be a sure sign that the J curve has plateau'd)

So actually GS are spending $500m up front to earn an indeterminate amount of fees over an indeterminate time frame in a business that on any rational benchmarks is trading at daft valuations

Bonkers.

Corporate America soon forgot about Lehman Bros & all that followed. What goes round.......

There is no realistic way of justifying those valuations.

Guess what % of FB Mr Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway owns?

None

Mr Buffett is all about cash flow and undervalued assets.

He doesn't own Apple, Google or Microsoft either. All massive cash cows. Just sayin' Smiley

Then again, I wouldn't touch Facebook with a bargepole either (not that I'd get the chance, GS have said they might offer stock to private investors in $2m chunks). There still seems to be no real clue as to how they're actually going to monetise the business.

Buffet does own a fairly large chunk of Goldman Sachs. I wouldn't bet against them making plenty of money on the deal.

On the issue of predicting the future ...

Ignore the headline, that was obviously just a banner prediction from 1989 designed to attract attention (although it's a shame it ddn't hapen)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/8238599/2010-predictions-from-1989-The-Duchess-of-York-never-made-it-to-the-Moon.html

Interstingly enough - although by 1989 JANET* was getting into her teens, the futurologists didn't foresee the rise and rise of the internet.

I could, theoretically, be around for another 30 years. (And I will, or die trying)

Where will technology be by then?

Way,way ahead of anything my brain can comprehend that's for sure.

I'm going for laser powered space flight, matter transporters, and motorway service station teapots with spouts that don't spill tea all over the table.

The teapot has been invented, but the question is will the Service Stations pay for them?

Yesterday I rebelled.

I don't rebel very often, but once every Preston Guild I wake up and say "Well I'm not doing that today".

As I said, it's not a regular thing, maybe not even once a year, and I have no idea what triggers it, but after a day of not doing what ever it was I was supposed to be doing, I feel wonderful and dreadful at the same time.

Yesterday, I rebelled against my diet.

I ate cheese on toast, crisps, chocolate and custard creams.

I can't figure out how it works. (Although I'm sure it does) You would imagine that by the time the tea had reached the groove on the underside of the pot, it would be all too late.

That's dead clever, that is. I think the point is that you can't prevent it dripping out the spout, but the under-lip means that it will always drip off the bottom of the end of the spout, not run back down the spout on to the table. Clever.
