Not to worry Tom some things do get better with age:

if you can find the most recent studio version of this it is absolutely stunning and age makes it sound like a completely different song:

I've always loved this song Eck, I think the lyrics are amazing, and as you say, all the more poignant with the passing of time.

Also quite funny that he was a Gyspy elder....they didn't put a lot of effort in to it, did they?

Thank you very much for the links guys. I really do appreciate it.

Billy Welch did a reasonable job imho, considering the constraints he was working under.

He did manage to point out that, as yet, there have been no actual Gypsy weddings, only Irish Traveller ones, and also that he at least, hadn't witnessed any "Grabbing"

I think tonight's show will include a Gypsy wedding (Violet Ann) which my family and I were present at. I hope they show an accurate representation of it. don't show me eating all the pie

Yes that was the fountain. Fortunately, I wasn't filling my glass.

Bare knuckle fights are very common. Almost always over a matter of honour, or a slur on someone's character or good name.

For a Gypsy, there is no shame in losing a fight, only in refusing to fight.

I thought the lady you know came across well. Level headed, respectful of traditions and yet a mind of her own.

Yes. I've known her since she was a baby, she's a lovely girl.

It was a shame that the film makers asked leading questions and edited it to make it appear that she would be dominated by her husband an have no say, nothing could be further from the truth. Gypsy marriages are true partnerships, it's just that male and female roles are clearly defined.

BTW- That was the only Gypsy wedding to be shown so far.

love this show Tom.

It has massive ratings for . Are they contributing anything to the Gypsy/Traveler Comunity making this TV?

Is it showing what you would like to see on TV regarding the Traveler/Gypsy life?

Regards

Yes, we had a big wedding in the sense that a lot of people came, but our wedding didn't cost very much. My suit was bought off the peg, as was Mrs Red's dress.

Mrs Red's aunt who used to do a bit of catering did the buffet, and her mother bought us a cake. Everyone turned up in lorries and vans (Not many Gypsies owned a car back then).

We had the reception in the church hall. (Pubs wouldn't have us back then either) A few weeks later the church was demolished. The next day, my father-in-law rolled up struggling with a brick weighing about 2 hundredweight that he had salvaged "As a memento"

When it was all over, we had a bank roll of about £30, a little trailer, a 4 cylinder TK with a flat battery, half a tank of diesel, a large loaf and a two gallon pot of stew.

No couple will ever be happier.

I'm afraid not John. Unfortunately it's heavily edited to portray Gypsies the way the program makers want the viewers to see us.

Well, just for a start...

I would like you to see what it's like to meet someone you have never met before, and yet know him for what he is, what he's been through, and know that he knows you the same. I would like you to understand the trust that you can have in this man because he gives his word, or slaps your hand.

Then I would like you to see what it's like to meet someone you have never met before, and have him hate you. Have him see you and your kind as scum, not fit to live among decent human beings.
