A reminder for Tony as he spends more time on this diary than his own

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b017ld83/Frontline_Medicine_Survival/

Did you see this at all Tom?

Geo

I'm about to go across there now, Geo.

It's a habit thing. Log on, check the Mods board, check the interesting Diaries & threads, then check Tom's. Only then do I go to my Diary.

Bit like when I eat a meal. Start with the peas, ends with the spuds, always leave the best until last.

such modesty Wink

I just like to spread a little culture to the lesser Diaries, Claire.

Lol, at first I read that as clutter

I can't figure out how they did the four lane wide stretch on the M1 without altering the bridges.

I saw a programme on the telly very recently about sandbanks being dredged for concrete with unfortunate repercussions, perhaps it was an old repeat but it did not seem so.

Where's Gatso when he's needed?

He is ignorant on matters pertaining to concrete, we are safe.

Back in the day, there was a lot of sea-dredging for aggregates & sand, but I'm surprised if it is still done, except perhaps in less developed parts of the world.

I'm curious, if it is still done around UK waters, what it is used for.

The Romans used concrete. They called it opus caementicium

I saw a programme once on the construction of the pantheon. it must've been well made as I find concrete to be a ridic dull subject but this was fascinating

that said I could tell you about a friend of mine in poland who made his fortune about 7 or 8 years ago when they started building a lot of motorways over there. he bought up a load of sandy fields that the farmers didn't want and then shipped truck loads of the stuff off to the construction companies

Mythbusters New Series. Another must-watch on now.

Can you row a barge using two excavators, or repair a bear damaged plane with duct-tape?

Because, for the most part, they removed the hard shoulder when the Motorway passed under bridges. Botched job, imo.

Note, by the way, the new-style central concrete crash barrier system.

I don't think they did, I've looked, but I won't contradict you until I've looked again.

this is how they did it on the parts of the M1 I have driven on that are now 4 lanes.

That would be wise.......note my clever caveat, "for the most part". Wink

There are several major Motorway widening schemes in progress, or freshly complete.

These include the section of M1 from J6 to J10, which is incredibly high standard - that is proper widening, bridges, gantries, the lot.

Likewise, the M25 from J16 to J21a, again, proper job. Compared to those, the M1 Midlands scheme, J25 to J28 is a bit of a botch really, very disappointing from the sense of quality road engineering.

There is a slim possibility that I may be slightly less than absolutely correct.
