"The putative particle weighs in at about 125 billion electron volts, about 125 times heavier than a proton and 500,000 times heavier than an electron, according to one team of 3,000 physicists, known as Atlas, for the name of their particle detector. The other equally large team, known as C.M.S. — for their detector, the Compact Muon Solenoid — found bumps in their data corresponding to a mass of about 126 billion electron volts.
If the particle does exist at all, it must lie within the range of 115 to 127 billion electron volts, according to the combined measurements. "We cannot conclude anything at this stage," said Fabiola Gianotti, the Atlas spokeswoman, adding, "Given the outstanding performance of the L.H.C. this year, we will not need to wait long for enough data and can look forward to resolving this puzzle in 2012."
125 times heavier than a proton? He'll do himself a mischief if he's not careful.
I hope he keeps his legs together.

Was all about fun things like birds and stuff til Kin stuck his geeky head in here. Now it's gone all intellectual and scientific and I might be forced to hang out on Tikay's diary for a bit. Hell, even yours will do at this rate.

I was thrilled to see a hen goldfinch land on the teasel just before dusk on Sunday. She managed to find a few seeds but a combination of wind and Kizzy had knocked most of it off.
She might come back though, fingers crossed.
I've moved to teasel plant so that this dwarf conifer supports it. Hopefully it will stop it shaking in the wind and stop Kizzy pushing it over.

In the Lawrence trial, the jurors were told not to let emotion play a part. Why not? I'd like to know.
If people say outrageous disgusting things, we should react with outrage and disgust.
Before the video was shown, Mr Justice Treacy warned the jury: "You may well find it shocking. If you do, you must remember that emotion has no part to play in your decision in this trial."

Because them saying racist things doesn't mean they killed Stephen Lawrence (even though, you know...). However, seeing them say racist things may lead jurors to react negatively against them, which makes them more likely to convict them, despite there being no new evidence in the clip to suggest they did the murder.
So, the jurors' emotions would cloud their judgement on whether those guys did it or not, and they're supposed to decide if they
think
they are guilty rather than whether they
feel
they are.

You're right of course, and that's exactly the type of argument I would put forward when Mrs Red goes on one of her "We know he did it, why waste money on a trial" rants, (Usually referring to a child-abuse case)
In this instance, I think that the emotions their language evokes does have a direct bearing on the issue. It helps you to decide if they are the type of person likely to commit this sort of crime.
Rather than cloud your judgement, I thing it clarifies it.
Or, as Mrs Red would say, "Who gives a shit what's fair? Just hang the bastards".

Boring but, the majority of egg producers are struggling to break even at the moment.
Supermarkets are squeezing all sectors in there greed to be the cheapest and biggest.
It's not good IMO Trev. It means people have to work for less and all the skill and pride goes out of everything.
The big new, state of the art battery farm thrives, but the little guys who have been in the game for generations
go to the wall.
And we all know what happens then:

It's one of these grey areas in our system. Apparently there is nothing on the video which relates directly to the murder of the young lad and the prosecutors obviously offer this up in order to paint a picture of just how moronic these thugs are. To allow it to be used leads me to think that the Judge actually thinks it is relevant, however has to keep the PC brigade happy by issuing such a warning.
There are other judges who quite possibly would not have let the video be used as it had no direct reference to the young lads murder.
Mrs Red is deffo my kind of lady btw.

I think that the other thing about the surveillance video being used is that it virtually guarantees an appeal.
In the event of them not being hung obviously...

The Thomas Cook slow death continues, they are now selling the family silver, to help pay off debts, according to a report from them yesterday.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16173578
On Tuesday, Thomas Cook sold Spanish hotel chain Hotels Y Clubs De Vacaciones (ICV) to Grupo Iberostar for 72.2m euros ($95.4m; £61m), as part of its move to sell assets to cut its debts.
They also announced that 200 High Street stores would close, not 75 as recently announced.
Then came the
piece de resistance
......
Mr Weihagen admitted that the business had been hit by people booking holidays on the internet.
Who'd have thunk?

I'll tell you what it is today. Cold! That's what it is.
The thermometer says it's
but it feels much colder.
As my mates wife would say in her raspy, Arthur Mullard voice, "It's dat wind tractor wot's makin it so cold"
Tom,
I was thinking about this the other day, how is your caravan in the bitter cold? I really cant imagine! (well i can and i dont like it!)
Have you carried out any modiifcations? How do you deal with all the condensation? Do you have any external wind barriers? Can you insulate it any better.
I know that you are a practical chap but i guess that there is only so much you can do. Any little tricks you care to share.
We have a plot of land in Scotland with a caravan on, but i have never gone in the winter (for obv reasons), but i actually think it would be the best time to go!
Central heating not working. Sitting here in hat & overcoat.
I blame you.
Nice bok.
