Jack's not a big fan of Halloween either.  He really should have thought it through a bit more before hooking up with a Yank.

That's a good likeness of him though.  Nice work.

Trick or treat?

Not sure what to say about that, Tom.

Radio 4 reported this morning that Halloween related retail sales were £12 million in 2001, & this year exceeded £300 million. Allegedly, the third most popular annual "festival" in the retail world now, after, presumably, Xmas & Easter. The recession is clearly biting, then.

Personally, I think it's all bollox. I even had to wear horns on the Show last night, ffs. It struck me as a sort of weird juxtaposition with the Poppy I was wearing.

I can't be doing with any of these commercialised "Special" days.

If they declared a "Do something nice for someone aside from buying a card or a gift and donate the money you save to a worthy cause" day, I would support it wholeheartedly.

Yes, Tony, but we got free sweets!

Ooohhh. Now I get it.

Is Dad still pleasingly plump & annoyingly argumentative?

I knew you'd see sense.
Dressing up, pumpkin carving, larking about with the kids, chatting to people in the village we only ever meet on that one night of the year and fighting grandad off of our chocolates afterwards.
Whats not to like?

I'll have you know the old man's been a good boy of late, he's looking rather trim.
Also, he hasn't won an argument at home since around 1987, so he's given up here and saves his efforts for this forum.  Wink

What, like say, Children in need day? Or Red Nose Day? Or Armed Forces day? Or.......
Well, you get the picture.

Story checks out.

I don't give a single card or pressie at Xmas to anyone, no exceptions, & when I receive them, instead of happiness, I feel huge embarrassment.

Christmas decs at home? Lol. I used to be too scared of "public opinion" not to, but that's long passed, sod that, there'll be no decorations in my house, ever ever ever.

Does that make me selfish, or unkind? Not one bit. I slleep fine at night, tyvm. It just means I'm not a practising Christian, & I don't buy the commercial exploitation of a religious Event.

Erm, I think you'll find that the event held at this time of year, now generally called 'xmas' was around well before the story of Jesus and his pals was created.

It's NOT a Christian/religious event, it's a public holiday that has been massively commercialised.  But it's not a religious event than has been commercially exploited.

There are a lot of events at all times of the year and some coincide. The mid winter solistice doesn't get celebrated much these days. The event that we celebrate is the birth of the son of god, hence the name Christmas, and as a nation purporting to be Christian we celebrate it as a public holiday.

and yes, it has got quite commercial.

You might be celebrating someone's birth, but but not everyone is.  Yes, it might be called xmas, but it's far removed from a religious festival for the majority. Halloween is meant to be a religious festival as well, I don't think many consider it as one.

Its only removed for those that wish it to be.

Halloween isn't really celebrated much as a Christian festival really. Its more of a dressing up game for children and Americans

Sigh at not having decos up though, brings a tear to my eye.

Blimey, what a memory!

Nothing has changed though. I'm not in the least resentful of those who celebrate Xmas with cards, pressies, decorations & all that stuff though, but its not for me.

I do find it odd that many people "celebrate" Xmas without even giving thought to what its significance is. Carol singers knock on my door, & before I give them money (or shoo them away, grumpily) I ask what they plan to do with money. Spend it on sweets means they get nothing, thats just begging.

I went to a remote part of Scotland Xmas before last. No decs, no cards, no pressies, no alcohol, no intenet, no phone, & no satellite TV. Best Xmas in my whole life, & not even close.

Each to their own, eh?

I'd like to think I'd be different if I had children, & celebrate it properly, but I'd insist they understood the what & why first. And I'd limit what I spent on pressies to £5 or £10 at the very max. I'd have another 364 chances every year to try & give them happiness.

Teeks, absolutely, each to their own indeed! I'm sure there are many things that you love that people have no interest in.. concrete or planes, possibly. Smiley I find it comforting you don't try and force your bah-humbuggery on others the way they (read we) try to force it on you. Smiley

I mentioned in my diary that my love of Christmas comes from my childhood. OOI what were your Christmases like growing up? Assuming they had Xmas' back then..

I'm with tikay.

Another reason I dislike it, is the pressure it puts on people. Financially, and the pressure of having to buy something nice for someone, that you really can't afford. I've already seen people commenting on fb that they HAVE to buy x amount of presents this year. That can't be right.
