Can someseems who knows how to work the Internet help me please?
I've been reading about something called 'Clare's Law', it's the first time I've heard of it and I can't figure out how it works.
According to the news websites, in the wake of the Clare Woods murder, a law was passed to allow women to check the criminal records of their boyfriends. What I don't understand is, how does that law work in practice?
Can any woman say, "My boyfriends name is x, can I see his criminal record?"
Does she have to prove he's her boyfriend, and if so how?
What constitutes a boyfriend? One date? Going steady for a year?
Does he have to consent, or at least be informed?
Can he check hers?
Can a man check his boyfriend's records?
It all seem pretty unworkable to me.

Seems to place a lot of responsibility on the police to judge risk & who to talk to.
Doesn't look like it can be used for fishing for info, although I'd worry that requests against someone could become a flag against them.
It seems that any concerned individual can kick this off about any person in a relationship, but they wouldn't necessarily be the person given information.
Thanks Rod.
It seems really unwieldy, impractical and open to abuse to me.

Would you expect a practical, easy solution to a kneejerk populist bit of legislation brought in through a kneejerk populist campaign by a tabloid? They'll get headlines again as soon as someone makes a report that stops at the police & anything bad happens afterwards - win win for the rags & keeps people scared about who their neighbours and friends are & dangers they pose, while ignoring the bigger issues.....

Seems like a good idea to me. It's not like any random can just get information on you. If there is a concern on the police side, then they would contact the best suited person to deal with it. No?
Not sure calling it a knee jerk reaction is fair.

If a man can't do the same for a woman this seems like the most bullshit law around.

The law isn't specific to woman checking on man. It works both ways. Same sex relationships too.

In a recession, cuts everywhere & you need a group of paid public servants to meet to discuss any case that isn't thrown out as timewasting. From one case where sadly a woman was killed. No impact study of the cost of the legislation, no estimate on how many people it will help (and how many relationships it will end). Seems mighty kneejerk to me.

Any luck with this?
