Aug 2nd is Roma Holocaust Memorial Day - when Roma peoples commemorate the hundreds of thousands killed by Nazis and their allies

not sure if you had seen this

Sherrie Smith, a florist and Romany Gypsy from Hertford, wants to take the first ever UK Gypsy and Traveller group to an annual Holocaust memorial event at Auschwitz. She sees it as vital for getting up to half a million Roma deaths more widely acknowledged, and - by extension - improving the lives of modern day Gypsies and Travellers. But the cost of flights has tripled and Sherrie's meagre budget means it might no longer be possible. Can she raise the extra funds to get the trip back on track? Grace Dent follows her story.

Yes I was aware Rich, and I have the programme bookmarked but I appreciate you mentioning it.

As you know I'm quite involved in Holocaust awareness in general and regularly take part in Holocaust memorial day activities.

I made my pilgrimage to Auschwitz several years ago, It was a very moving, perhaps even life-changing experience.

I recently sat of a steering group to decide which of several proposed holocaust memorial, museum and visitor's centre would get the go-ahead.

The one we chose is going to be a mega project in an amazing location.

The zoomed in bit helps - Science Wife's new theory is that  it looks like animal damage - the tree sap tastes good to a lot of animals.

This is a forestry leaflet on squirrel damage
https://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/Identifyingsquirreldamage.pdf/$file/Identifyingsquirreldamage.pdf

It's still a little intriguing because so much of the tree has been stripped of bark - but a lot of animals doing the same thing could get through it.

And the neat circle level of where it starts does look a lot like it could be about a squirrel height from the lowest branch.

- I'm assuming they have squirrels in Vienna(?) It could obviously be a different animal - her first thought was that it could be a bird but I definitely don't know anything about Austrian bird watching.

EDIT: last minute googling suggests it looks a lot like porcupine damage but I'm pretty sure they're not native

^good work

^^ doubt it's animal damage, I think it is a natural feature of the tree.  In my attempts to identify it I have come across a couple of "young bark smoother than older bark" descriptions.  But can't find anything that matches.

Here is one of the particularly large versions.

Well I would have said silver birch too but I've never seen one like that. The demarcation on the trunk is so abrupt. Almost like it's been photoshopped.

Still can't find out what these strange trees are.  My completely uneducated guess is that the lower bark is some sort of protection against animals (perhaps deer?) and falls off higher up.  Here's a pic where some of the rougher bark has come off revealing the silver bark under.

My guess is a silver birch.  It does look like one, there are multiple varieties and some have the most beautiful bark which becomes more glorious the older the specimen gets. They are tolerant (thankfully) of both the bark and sap being taken from them at the correct time of year, arctic birches in particular are a valuable commodity to both the drinks industry - they are tapped once a year for the sap which is a traditional drink in a few European contries and also to make  birch water which is available in the UK and also birch beer. It is also used in the beauty industry - for at least a well know shower gel that is quite invigorating!

You are welcome Tom and you are very kind. A few of you know I have lurked here for a long time! Tis true I don't tend to post alot, mainly because contrary to rumour I don't know much about gambling and some may even say about poker, so I keep those thoughts to myself. But according to Newportlad I know alot of shit, in my heart I know that there is a compliment in there somewhere! But if there is a topic or rather post anywhere on Blonde I'm confident I know something about I'm happy to chip in. Hopefully the next one won't be so long, I'm determined to get to be a Hero member before I shuffle off this mortal coil  Smiley

I think you should let JohnMW know who your builder is.

It was a learn as you go process. The most important thing I learned was to measure things very very carefully.

Warning. Old fart post not really relevant to anything.

Today I was thinking about how easily entertained people were when I was a kid.

TV - Sunday Night at the London Palladium.

Headline act - Frankie Vaughan.

My family speculate excitedly - Will he do a high kick?

Consensus  - He will if he sings Gimme the Moonlight.

Wow! There, he did it. Did you see it?

Yes it was fantastic, he always does it.

Bugger, I was looking for the ashtray and missed it.

Serves you right, you should pay attention.

Heady days.
