If you live in West Bridgford you have to send your kids to Notts High School. I believe it's the law.

IT'S A SICK GAME!
Dealing with the swings of playing poker fulltime is bloody exhausting. I'm really interested in how our brain works with regards to these swings, why some things piss us off but others don't, so I'm gonna ramble a bit to try and work it out. If I can rationalise it, then maybe it'll help.
I'm convinced that the stakes you play is nothing to do with how well you handle the swings- the only thing is, as you get more experienced you get used to it more. I know people who get pissed off at bad beats at 5c10c or 2$ comps on stars - and they're also over the moon at a big upswing at those stakes or turning their 2$ into $300. At the other end of the scale, there's people like Sam Trickett, who tweet one day about how much their loving life and comments like "just won 350k in a cash game in Macau, off to play tennis now" and then a few days later you get something like "Can't stand online poker, just been one outered". So that's one person being pissed off at losing $50 and another being pissed off at losing 100k.
So what drives people into getting pissed off? You could argue it's what that money represents as a proportion of that persons net worth. For example, Joe Bloggs works at Tescos goes out on a friday after payday and hits the casino. Loses £200. He's devastated. £200 takes him a week to earn and he's lost it in a few minutes. Ouch.
On the other end of the scale, Sam Trickett goes out with his mates to the dogs, puts £200 on race, it doesn't come in - losing this money doesn't even register on his emotional scale. He could do the same for 5 more races and not blink an eye.
Personally, I think it's the losing. I'm convinced that if I played 5c10c for the next 3 days and went on a big downswing, lost 20buyins, I'd be in a horrible mood. Constantly losing hand after hand, buyin after buyin - it'd SUCK! And I know that if instead, I sat at a 1/2 table and insta lost a buyin with aces vs queens, I'd hardly care at all. Even though these are the same monetary amounts, the two are massively different. Constant losing sucks!
On Wednesday for example, I had a bit of spare time to kill before football and fired up 6 tables for a quick half hour session. I lost 5 buyins in that time. It's pretty hard to lose 5 buyins over 200 hands and it feels pretty nasty cos the money is just going so quickly! However, after football we go to DTD for a 2/5 game and about an hour in, I lose a grand with Jacks vs Mitch's aces, cutoff vs button in a straddled pot. Totally standard hand, and it didn't effect me one bit, felt just the same emotionally as I did before the hand. Why does my brain do that? We care about losing 5x $200 but not about losing 1x £1000? I honestly think I'd be more pissed off at losing 20x $10 than 1x £1000. That seems a little crazy, but at the same time, totally logical. Losing a buyin should mean almost nothing to a poker player, so long as you're rolled for the game of course. Losing 20 buyins is really shit though, no matter what the stakes.
Another interesting point I've observed is how excited I get over pots. I'd be fascinated to monitor my heart rate across different games. Again, I'm sure my brain seems to be irrational there. Winning a 500bb pot at 50/1 is way more exiting and exhilarating than winning a 100bb pot at 2/5. The monetary amounts don't mean anything - they're just numbers. Try explaining that concept to a muggle.
It's easy to from the outside looking in to think "how can that person be annoyed at that, when he won x donkament a few months ago for 100x that amount". Trust me, we're all human and nobody is immune to the swings. I'm sure that main event winners still get a bit pissed off at getting their aces cracked...

£250 on a horse. it loses, meh, standard.
Lose a 250bb pot with
AA
QQ vs AK aip, meh, standard
Get one outered deep in a $5 freeze, [ x ] xzjhksfadhskdjfhgksadjfhasdjkhfjasdh.. why me? why now? how do they always get there? etc etc
Obv the money is insignificant. its how it happens to you imo.
Reckon there will be lots of different answers as people deal with stuff differently but for me its how it happens.
Like on roulette you are expecting to lose, but when it lands in the number right next door it hurts so much more.

That post comes off the back of a rollercoaster few days. Winning loads, then losing loads. Yesterday was pretty miserable, hardly played at all online, but the hands I did play - went bad. Lost about $900 in 3/4 coolers and bad beats, standard stuff, but it got me in a bit of a bad mood - after a nasty day the day before and a few annoyances in the real world, I was feeling a bit pissed off. This game gets to you so easily, I wish I could separate "work" from play. I'd really like to be able to shake off a horrible session and then go and have dinner with Hannah and be in a great mood again. But it's not that easy - it does affect my mood - still. Not as much as it used to, but it does.
I go to DTD feeling a bit down, tired and I have that horrible feeling where you KNOW you're going to lose. But it's a good lineup and I should really put in the hours...I should stay... Whilst waiting for the game to start we play a series of £25 omaha flips 3ways and then 4ways. I lose 9 in a row, win one and then lose 4/5 more in a row - down £250 before the session starts. DEFINITELY going to lose tonight!
Then out of nowhere the sun begins to shine and I'm golden again! I have AJ it comes JJx, big pot off the samurai, I have
KQcc
K3cc and it comes AQ4cc
on the turn, Thigh has KJ - perfect. Pulled off a big bluff and hit some more flops - we've won 1200! Where did that come from?! We leave with a sprint in our step, and we're suddenly in a good mood again - we #LOVETHEGAME! It's SICK!

I think the long-term 'pain' from losing is more noticeable if the money is for a significant amount (which obviously differs from person to person).
I've never understood players getting massively upset when they get outdrawn or coolered. I only get upset (with myself) when I play like a donk. Of course, bad beats aren't fun but they happen and it's OK to have a whinge (to yourself or to someone who'll stupidly lend an ear for a few minutes) or let off some steam away from the table and then move on.

Yeah - the worst long term pain ones are the biggest financial ones for me
However the worst short term ones are where you have been setting a guy up for a while and they spike a miracle in a 200bb pot (im not talking a 20%'er), Im more talking he floats flop oop with an air ball, turns a gut shot and leads for pot, then calls the raise, and rivers his miralce type hands

I think this part is something that you spoke about before and reminds me of myself years ago and also many people you see now who before the game or on the breaks will be playing Roulette/Blackjack/Machines and can tilt off more than a buyin which is never good for the mind!!
Boshi is correct as in it is all relative but think if you can distance yourself from the ££ involved and concentrate on making the correct decisions then as you clearly have an edge in what you are doing all you need to think of is the long game.
Personally I think I am a good winner/loser but it has cost me a lot of money to find that balance
