When the paper emerges, will it have specific time limit in it or not? If it does, then the PM has backed down, if not, DD has rolled over

Very much enjoying all this dithering to find out what the EU is going to say no to.

May has folded. Davis gets his “win” backstop on CU and SM alignment is time limited and doesn’t resign.

One thing which will almost certainly be time-limited is his victory party, because the EU will most likely reject the proposal before it arrives in Brussels.

^^ very good

Ok now it’s over. Backstop wording has been changed, but still no firm date for the time limit. An ‘expectation’ when it should expire, to be agreed with Brussels. So, a massive fudge on both sides.

Technical note on temporary customs arrangement

This document sets out the UK’s proposal for a ‘backstop’ customs arrangement between the UK and EU.

Here's the key section from the Brexit backstop paper, just published. The UK "expects" the backstop to be time limited to the end of 2021 and will "discuss with the EU".

journalists are having fun

"BREXITEERS AT WAR: A senior brexit-supporting gvt source:

"DD claims of victory are simply delusional. He has once again been outmanoeuvred and outwitted by Robbins and his officials. Even Barnier is now expressing sympathy for him. It's beyond a joke now."

Jeremy Corbyn says Labour's planned Brexit customs union must allow for UK to strike its own trade deals.

Huh?

the whole point of a Customs Union is that you CAN’T do your own trade deals.  If individual members have their own separate trade deals, it’s no longer a Customs Union.

How Theresa May is selling today to her MPs

"Unpalatable but at worst temporary".  Key line. In other words, No.10's message to Brexiteers: the medicine is not nice (for you), but please swallow it.

Boris's deputy Alan Duncan in Berlin today: "It would, I suppose, just be possible to ask the people in a referendum if they liked the exit deal or not. It would not in reality offer people the option of reversing the original decision to leave the EU.”
