Next to 'flushing toilet', which is fairly apposite.

Handcent SMS is the best SMS app I've come across for android - very customisable as well.

SMS backup is also a must if you want to back up your texts.

Others I have include:

Barcode scanner
Shop Savvy
Bar Control
Bet on the move
beebplayer
cab4me
Facebook sync
handyCalc
Google Sky Map
Locale (paid)
Missed Call
Movie Finder
MyBackup Pro (paid)
Power Manager
Ringdroid
Seesmic or Twidroid (paid) if you use twitter
The Weather Channel
Wifi Fixer
Yata

and the best app of all imo - Wireless tether (but only if you have root access)

Oh, and saw someone with a Nexus using 'Swype' - what a brilliant app for phones without a hardware keyboard. Makes text entry an absolute breeze.

Unfortunately, it's only in beta at the moment and they've stopped giving out downloads.  But I'm sure it will be in open release soon.

Just before the weekend, got myself a Samsung Galaxy S Android phone.  Looks very very similar to an iPhone, and now having played with it for a few days, got to say, miles better than the iPhone.

Bigger screen
higher quality Amoled screen
more memory
memory slot to put in as much more memory as I might want
Not restricted to stuff that is tightly controlled by iTunes store

it does everything an iPhone can do, and MORE..  Ok, some apps like Sky sports not there, but there are better alternates like ESPN sports, which is not just football its all sports..

I did compare all the android handsets including the HTC ones and this one compared top 2...  The best was called the HTC Evo, but, unfortunately as that came out in USA few weeks ago, aparently no plans to release in UK at all..  Shame..

Also got plenty of help from Kinboshi, many thanks...

Great APP though when you consider your paying something like 79p a track in itunes

Bet On The Move App is perfect for Betfair, and the Talking Tom app is comedy...

All that comes up is Signal Radar when i search for it

http://pda.wareseeker.com/HOBBIES/bet-on-the-move-1.0.2.zip/15fc3aa0a4

Can you get it on the market, never downloaded an app direct to phone, would not have a clue where to start..

Not seen it on the market but just went into google and downloaded that link via the phone.

I'm looking at the alternatives now as well.  The Desire and Galaxy S both look good, but it's such a shame that the Droid X won't be coming to the UK.  Looks like the dog's licky bits.  It's only on Verizon in the states, so that means you can't even buy it there and bring it back to the UK to get it unlocked and put a UK SIM in it, sigh.

Ty, I don't think you'll go massively wrong with either of those two.  I might even wait a few months and see what else is due to come out.

Got the Galaxy S a couple of weeks back - mostly pleased with it - the screen is amaxingly clear and the video is better than the wife's Flip

But...

Twice so far it has just lost signal totally and I've had to put the SIM card into my old phone. I'm waiting for Orange to call me back in 10 minutes (since Saturday afternoon...)

Not sure what the new ones are going to be.  All got 'codenames' such as the 'ace', the 'G2' (that's what they're calling it in the US, we call the Hero the G2 over here already), 'vision'.  Not sure which ones will be coming to the UK and which won't.

So it's the Galaxy S, the Desire or the Nexus if you want one now (and maybe one or two others).

The Desire would probably be my choice if I was getting one today.

I believe, the soon to be rolled out, Android v2.2 will bring HD video to the Desire... something that the Galaxy has already.

2.2 is already out for a lot of phones (especially if you've rooted your phone, you can make sure you get it before it's released by your provider).  It seems to be a pretty big jump from 2.1 (which was a big jump from the previous version of android).  Flash 10.1 for the browser is a nice touch as well.

http://gizmodo.com/5543853/what-is-froyo

Things like the wireless tethering that turns the phone into a wi-fi hotspot were available before, but only if the phone was rooted.  Really handy feature that I use a fair bit when I'm out and about.

Since doing this is against the mobile operators' t&c... this will almost certainly be disabled in their branded firmware releases.

I've just ordered a Desire, on a decent (compared to my current package) deal, from mobiles.co.uk. They're part of Carphone Wharehouse group and allegedly send out un-locked, un-branded phones. I'll know for sure tomorrow.

I assume you do it the same way it is done on the Desire, since they have the same operating system.

Have a look here - http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/84650-show-us-your-desire-homescreens.html - everything discussed here for the Desire should work on the Galaxy S.

There is also a Galaxy S dedicated board - http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/

Instant Heart Rate App - Cool

Stick your finger over the camera and it displays your heart rate.

Note: It works better on phones with a flash  LED... this alone makes the Desire far better than the Galaxy S! :)up

Just picked up my HTC Desire (replacement after losing the last one...sigh) and stumbled on to this site  www.appbrain.com

Sign up with them and download appbrain to your phone.  You can surf for apps from your pc.  Pick and save what you're interested in on their site.  Then download the lot to the phone when ready.  Saves battery on the phone by having your search already done on the pc.

I much prefer this to the standard browser. Allows for tabbed browsing and can run flash.  Fennec is in beta, which is firefox for mobiles. However, it's huge and at the moment doesn't allow you to install it to the sd card. So until it does, I'll be sticking to Dolphin.

The difference between Froyo (android 2.2) and previous versions is unbelievable.  The phone is 5 times faster and far more stable.

Love the built-in wireless and usb tethering, point-to-point sat nav a well as a lot of small features all over the place.

You don't have to download the apps to your computer first though.  You can click the 'QR' button on the page of the app and it'll show you the QR code that you can scan using the app 'barcode scanner' and then you'll be able to go directly to the app in the market to download it.

Click on the app you're interested in to get to the review of it.  Top left hand side click on 'Install' if yer interested in the app.  Rinse repeat until you're finished searching for apps.  Then go to the phone and click on AppBrain.  Click 'Manage and Sync' then work yer way down the list of pending apps to install them.

Didn't download anything to my computer.  Everything goes str8 to the phone.  It stores a list online of what I've put on the phone too.  Handy for when this one goes missing.   ::)

Just had my HTC Desire for a week or so, so not too much on it yet. I've just got a 32GB micro SD card to replace the 4GB that comes with the phone. Do I have to go through some sort of set procedure to transfer the data from one card to the other? Or is it just a case of copying the contents of the 4GB card to my PC, then copying it from my PC to the 32GB card?

You tap the centre and it listens for 30 secs to a song playing on your car radio or in a club

and it tells you the name of the song, the lyrics, which album its on etc

v handy in a pub quiz music round lol

Yes you can just copy to the PC from one card, and then copy it on to the other.

If you decide to root your phone, one of the biggest benefits is the 'nandroid backup'.  http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Howto:_Nandroid_Backup

It basically works like a system restore, and allows you to take full backups of your phone and card so if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how the phone was at a previous point.  That's how I've moved from one SD card to another in the past.

With the SD cards, it's obviously good to have a bigger card - but possibly the most important factor is the 'class' of card. The higher the number the faster it can read/write data, which is important on a smart phone, especially as many of the apps will be installed on your card (rather than the phone itself).

In my G1 I tried a class 2 8GB card (that I already had).  The phone ran terribly.  Replaced it with an 8GB class 6 card - and it flew in comparison. I could imagine HD video would need a fast card like you said.

Also for free music download Music Wizard

Who needs to wait for Swype, when they have 'Voice to Text' already on their phone, out of the box?

Those who are waiting, may have a long wait... I don't believe the developers intend to make it available for download, preferring to sell it to handset manufacturers for inclusion on new phones.

I've had 'Locale' installed on my phone for a while and it's pretty powerful.

But 'tasker' looks even more powerful.  Allows you to get your phone to do 'things' according to the situation you're in.  So for example, you can set it so when you're at home it switches the wi-fi on, disables the key-lock and turns the volume down (and off between the hours you want to sleep).  It can do a lot more than that, but takes a bit of reading and playing around with to understand what you can do with it.  It's a paid app £3.99 - but that's hardly going to break the bank.

There's a whole load of advice and tips about tasker on reddit:  http://www.reddit.com/r/tasker

My friend is swapping out his wonky HTC Desire for a new one, but wants to back it all up to storage card and take select files with him before wiping it. Some files aren't backed up by this process so he wants to pull them out manually. Is there a decent file manager? Is there a way of installing a program by using a PC to put an install prog on an SD card?

I have just ordered a HTC Desire HD, was a flip with that and a Samsung Galaxy S. HTC won as it was in stock tomorrow where the galaxy would not be in stock for 2 weeks from T-Mobile. I'm now looking to divert all emails from my Blackberry 9700 to HTC. T-Mobile have let me take my 9700 contract only 3 months old, down from £50 a month to £18 a month and take on this 2nd phone on, got seriously bored of the BB except for BBM. So thanks T-Mobile

What app's would people suggest for the phone? Looking online, It's arriving Saturday. Is it possible to get everything pre downloaded to laptop and transfer when phone arrives.

** Quick edit to make sure I have not been miss sold ** The lady over the phone said for £35 (discounted for length I have been with T-Mobile, it will come with 1200 minutes, Unl texts, but 1GB of internet (but said if i go over this I will not have to pay for it?) has anyone else come across this

Thanks in advance

Something like this (http://www.winpcware.com/net_networking/bandwidth-monitor-pid5938.htm)? Type Bandwidth Monitor PC or Bandwidth meter PC into Google and you get a few.

Although I'm assuming that's what netcounter is - totals up traffic across Wifi/LAN/3G/etc?

I do not download any data its all streaming.

I can ring up BT to ask how much Gb I have used, but its a pain

Well, I've finally been dragged kicking and screaming into the smart phone era. The handset I went for isn't very fashionable (Or should that be desirable) but it has a good camera and a proper xenon flash, which is important for me.

So far I've managed to make a call, send a text, browse the web and download an app (What's the difference between an app and a widget?)

What I can't seem to do is download pics to my pc, or upload music to the phone.

With my previous not quite so smart phones, I've simply connected to the pc via a USB cable, and up pops the scanner and camera wizard. It shows me thumbnails of my pics, I select the ones I want, click "Next" and voila!

When I connect the data cable to smart arse, the wizard pops up, but the thumbnails are blank, or have the same icon, but no visible picture, so I can't select the ones I want. I can "Select All" but when I click "Next" nothing happens. It says it's downloading my pics, but it's lying.

Also,',',',',' I usually upload music by accessing the phone's memory and just dragging and dropping, but I can't find it in "My Computer."  I can find the phone camera, but not the phone's memory card.

And before anyone asks....    Yes. I have tried turning it off and on.

Once you've mounted the phone's SD card, don't use any wizard to transfer the files, just open up a Windows Explorer window to show the contents of the SD card, and another for the destination folder on your PC.  Simply drag and drop between the two.

Or have you already sorted that issue?

They are good bits of kit aren't they?  You'll soon find the more you know about them, the more questions you'll have. Then you'll end up breaking it (but as long as you backup your stuff and don't leave your phone in the back of a taxi then you'll be fine as you can restore everything).

It's a great app.  Was sat in a field at a festival round the camp fire at about four in the morning and loads of us were lying on our backs with people asking which constellation was which and which planets we could see - was cool.  Other than that, never used it.

I have 500MB. In the two full months that I have bills for, I used 117MB and 133MB.

I probably wouldn't be a heavy user (not sure how you would quantify light / heavy usage).

I suspect those with 20/20 vision, that don't have to squint to read things, would probably use more? :)

I've had the same number with Vodafone since 1988. I never upgrade my phone because I want to change my phone when it suits me, be it twice in a year or once in 5 years.

So, at contract renewal time, I always try to negotiate a better contract, and I'm quite good at haggling.

Bugger!!

Had to exchange my phone due to a technical fault.

Lost a nice simple little app that sat on the home screen and allowed me to toggle WiFi Bluetooth GPS and screen brightness.

It was just the 4 (or maybe five) icons on a little toolbar, nothing else.

Anyone know what it's called?

What a complete rip off the Iphone deals are, having used both they are similar but the Htc Desire is much cheaper but also faster and has a much better screen etc.

I love my Desire, but if I was getting a phone now I'd go for the Desire HD.  Faster, bigger, generally better - the biggest single benefit being the greater internal storage.

Thanks to Linux for the heads-up on this one.  I've been using swype as my inpuinput keyboard,  but am now trying this out and I'm liking it so far.  It should get even better over time the more I use it.

Got my desire hd...very fast...I'm v impressed at the features...anyone know how to transfer everything from my old htc...txt messages, and apps...etc...

If your old android phone was rooted you can do a backup and restore to your new phone, and then play around a bit to get it right. Other than that I'm not sure.  Your downloaded apps are linked to your account,  and even more so if you use appbrain to manage your apps. That would make it easier to move to a new phone with the minimum of fuss.

my galaxy s seems to freeze quiet a lot, any tips?

Ive deleted apps etc but it still takes ages to load and i just end up pulling battery out and restarting it. I'm guessing thats not the technically correct way to go about it.

It shouldn't do that very often at all, unless you're really hitting it with some memory/processor-intensive apps.

What version of the OS is it running, and I'm assuming you haven't 'rooted' the phone and applied a modified version of the OS (which actually run far better than the stock OS as they make better use of storage space and processor capacity, etc.).

My Galaxy also does this - it's still on the old Android and I haven't rooted it due to a lack of understanding of what this entails and how to do it.

Any helpful links?

Just got an Android phone for the first time and quite pleased with it, two app questions:

Whats the best app for watching videos I have downloaded from t'internet

Are there any apps for improving the quality of the video camera? The first impression of the camera on my phone is that it films videos 'a bit choppy'

There are so many apps out there its overwhelming

The problem if you use another calendar that is just on your phone - you lose your phone and it's all gone.

Obviously, what's happened to your google calendar is a bugger - and it shouldn't have happened.  It shows that even if you have your calendar in two locations (one being your phone, and the other being the 'cloud' in this case google's servers), if something goes wrong with the sync, you can lose both sets of data.  There is an option in Google calendar to export your calendar entries, and it looks as though doing that on a regular basis is the answer, and then storing that data on your PC and wherever else as a backup.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help you this time - and I'm sure your confidence in Google calendar is shot as well.

I've never had a problem either, but this has made me rethink my complacency and I'm now in the process of backing up all my gmail (45GB worth in 55,000 emails!) to my hard-drive using Thunderbird.

It's going to take a good few days though :D

That's not the point I'm making Kin.

The data is obviously stored on my phone because I can see it. It is not, (At the moment) on the online 'Google' calendar.

That being the case, how did l lose both sets of data, i.e that stored on the phone, and that stored online?

I don't think it's possible to accidentally wipe everything from the phone.

But if that were the case, then what's the point of the google back up?

its not so much that google backs it up, it syncs it.. I suppose if you dont have auto sync, then if you did wipe it off your phone then you have a chance to sync again with your google account..

Been running this for over 24-hours now, and still got a while to go!  I mis-read the number of emails, it's over 100,000 that make up the 45GB worth.  Should have backed them up long ago, but Tom's problem has highlighted that even though I've gone 7 years on gmail without a problem I shouldn't get complacent.

Looks like we've sorted a solution for Tom going forward.   Still going to use Google for the calendar, and have it sync with the phone, but Tom will be exporting his calendar manually and saving it onto his PC.  That way if the calendar gets wiped again, he can import the exported file and restore all his calendar entries.

Ask on the cyanogenmod forum. Someone will help.

I'm on 7.0.2 (cyanogen mod) and it's excellent. Lots of improvements to the previous one.

One thing I would recommend to anyone with an android phone is to use google's two-step verification to help protect your account.  I can confidently allow apps to use my google account for authorisation without worrying about the safety of my account. My scare yesterday was probably a blessing in disguise.

Open up the native messaging app and disable the notification in there.

Then in handcent you can choose the notification settings you want, and you can also set up individual settings for different contacts.

gentle alarm

Quote
An alarm clock shouldn't shell-shock you out of your dreams. That's why I created Gentle Alarm which tries to wake you up during light sleep using an optional pre-alarm.

Alarm clocks can't know if you are in light sleep or deep sleep (those movement based alarm clock don't work) but they can play a very quiet pre-alarm which you will only hear if you are in light sleep. If you are in deep sleep, you will simply sleep through the pre-alarm.

The pre-alarm plays 30min before you really want to get up (you can change that). If the pre-alarm wakes you up, you will be more refreshed than if you had slept until the main alarm because at that time you would have fallen back into deep sleep. Give it a try and I am sure you won't want to miss it anymore.

was highly sceptical of this at first but it's amazing, I've not woken up feeling tired since I started using it

Advisable to upgrade to 2.3.4 at the earliest opportunity (to check your phone's OS version, click on menu -> settings -> About phone), and to avoid using open wi-fi networks (which is good advice in general), and also to use the google two-step verification.

I doubt you'd lose anything, probably gain a lot of functionality though.

I'm on a modded version so have to wait until the newest version has been modded before I can upgrade. Others just have to wait for the upgrade to become available I think.

I have a Motorola xt720.

The camera shutter sound is very loud.

There is no "Turn off shutter sound" option.

(The law in some countries, including the one where this phone was made, insist that the phone makes a noise when taking a picture).

I would like to find a working app that allows me to mute my native camera.

I have tried "Silent Snap". It doesn't work.

Does that allow me to use my native camera do you know?

I have a Motorola xt720.

The camera shutter sound is very loud.

There is no "Turn off shutter sound" option.

(The law in some countries, including the one where this phone was made, insist that the phone makes a noise when taking a picture).

I would like to find a working app that allows me to mute my native camera.

I have tried "Silent Snap". It doesn't work.

You would still be able to use the native camera, but whether or not it will still make the shutter sound I'm not sure.

I downloaded Camera360... found that it had the option, tried it and then un-installed it. I didn't bother trying my native camera while it was installed.

It's free so I would suggest just giving it a go.

It looks complicated.

It seems to be a picture editing / manipulation app or even a collection of several apps.

Yes. I did it in "Normal" with the little speaker-no entry icon. (Yes?)

I tried both on screen shutter button in the camera360 programme and the hard-wired shutter button on my phone, which still takes a picture when using the app.

htc desire is head and shoulders above everything else so get yerself an HD

after my many a thousand text messages being sent episode

as a good will gesture HTC offered me an upgrade from my HTC Desire HD, to the newer HTC Sensation. they look similar, but the sensation is well,,,sensational....its much quicker with a dual core processor, a much better battery (my only negative of the desire hd) l      its lighter, thinner and all round better looking.
the new "watch" is pretty good too, it allows u to rent or buy movies and u dont have to wait for them to be downloaded, only watched a few trailers, but the quality is awesome. defo recommend the HTC SENSATION over the DESIRE HD (although still a fantastic phone)

http://www.htc.com/uk/product/sensation/specification.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=HTC%20sensation&utm_campaign=Model+-+HTC+Sensation+%28Paused%29&utm_content=sdJWCd5tR!pcrid!12607335702

I find Camera 360 really hard to get hold of, not on Android Market, so I use Retro Camera, Vignette and HDR Camera.

There seem to be loads of copycat Tower defense games but I really like Myth Defense , very varied and polished. I even nearly paid for it but can't find a way round my bank charging me £1.50 for 'foreign' google transactions??????

To be fair, it depends what you want from the phone.  The S2 is excellent for video, if that's what you want from your phone.  So perfect for your animal porn.  The Sensation is probably the best for 'phone' stuff.

They've both got excellent processors and are lightning quick.

Getting confused.  My phone is due for renewal and I'm going to go for an Android devise rather than the new iPhone but am really stuck between the S2 and the new Sensation XE.   If the S2 didn't feel so cheap to hold, I'd go for that but I quite like the look of the new XE and Sensations are at least made of more than a sheet of plastic.

I was all sold on the XE until I stupidly read another review (Engadget) which really didn't rate it that much saying the Beats were too gimicky and the camera was rubbish.   I don't mind the Beats being a bit naff, I thought that anyway but I'd like a decent camera.   The HTC phones are at least a decent build quality and I quite like the red and black colour scheme.  I

On the other hand, I've never read a bad review of the S2 but having held one I'm really not keen on the flimsy feel.

Sigh, what to do.  I expect I'll be happy with whichever I choose but want to be sure before I go for another two year deal.

Title: Re: Android apps
Post by: david3103 on October 17, 2011, 10:42:13 AM
I have the S2 and I'd agree that on first handling it it feels a little flimsy - but I don't think about that now.

It is so much quicker than the original and I really can't fault it at the moment. The camera is a massive improvement on the previous model and at the base level of point n shoot it's easily as good as a mid-range compact camera. Video clarity is outstanding too.

It's a slightly odd shape though and I wouldn't recommend it if you have small hands.

I've ordered the Sensation XE.  Should be with me on Weds.

One thing, is there a program like iTunes that Android apps use?   I quite like iTunes despite the haters and find it handy for organising what goes on and comes off my phone.

Try Doubletwist (http://doubletwist.com/)....it reads your music and playlists from iTunes and copies them to your phone. You need to download the program to your PC/Laptop and install the Android app.

It's free....

...although if you want the wireless syncing you have to pay for the Airsync app...otherwise just use a USB cable.

Is there a Betfair app? edit:nm, found it on the Betfair site.  Strange that it didn't show in the Android market

OK after much dithering I'm about to order an S2.  I was also looking at Kindles for books, but wondered if I need to bother. Is the S2 just as good for reading e-books/pdf docs? Or is it a bit harsh on the eyes?

it's a free app. give it a try. some people love it on phone, some hate it

Phone's too small for me to read on, I'm constantly scrolling, don't like it.

When good old Ice Cream Sandwich (and future software updates) gets released, do we get to upgrade free of charge?

There's a kind of symbiosis between the phone makers, carriers, and Google. They put Android on their phones, Google doesn't go around making it easy to upgrade your phone to the latest edition of Android, which encourages people to buy new phones, keeping the makers/carriers happy.

Received the SII today, should I be kicking myself I didn't wait 24 hours????????????

Wouldn't worry.  My HTC Desire is still working well and it's a two-year old phone now in terms of the technology. I'm sure the SII and the Sensation will be more than adequate for a good 12-24 months. It's the same with smartphones as it is with computers, the best time to buy is 6-months after you buy yours...

Brag - £31 a month, no upfront fee, 500 mins, 5000 texts, 2000 3 to 3 mins, 24 month warranty
Beat - It's on 3 :D

No data allowance?

Cheap deal though, most places have an upfront fee at £30 pm.     Looks a nice phone.  You'll like the S2, it's not like that's gone from being one of the best phones on the market to being old tech overnight.

Got all you can eat data plus loads of calls and texts on Oneplan on 3, month to month contract, 25 quid, plus you can tether, using WIFI tether on Android (no root needed), works like a dream (once 'always on mobile' has been enabled). Download movies, whatever, they don't care.

Fab app: getspool.com     Chrome browser plugin, if I'm on a page I like, or the page has  vid I like, eg youtube, bbc news, etc, I just click the button on browser. I go to Spool on my phone, and the page or video is sitting there, wiii!

Been trying to work out a way to make my phone trackable even once hard reset, apparently possible but you need to cook a rom :/

Not got any myself.  Just be careful what you install (just use the market for installing stuff unless you think you can judge what's OK or not).

The main thing I'd advise anyone using gmail/android is the two-step verification to help prevent your account being compromised.

I've been an Android user for a few years now, but I haven't experimented much with apps. I mostly play simple games and have practical apps (Tesco, The Weather Channel, Currency Exchange); I know - what a geezer, right?

Some of the more interesting ones I'd recommend are:

Shazam (http://www.shazam.com/music/web/android.html) - if you're out and about and you hear a song you like, it finds the name for you.
QuickDic (http://www.appbrain.com/app/quickdic-offline-dictionary/com.hughes.android.dictionary) - despite the suggestive name, it's not sexy in the least. It's just an offline language dictionary, so you don't have to worry about roaming when you're abroad.
DI.fm (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.audioaddict.di) - awesome web radio.

Most apps ask for a ridiculous amount of access to things you'd never think they would need.

This is one of those things you'll either have to live with or withous as all apps will ask for pretty much far more access than you would think necessary.

As long as it's from a 'trusted source' I go with it.

After all, Google's motto is "Do No Evil" right?

My contract's up and I've been eyeing up the HTC One X, now available on all networks.

3 seems to have the best package for my needs, and I'm definitely leaving t-mobave a question for anyone on 3, who has an android phone. They're asking for an additional fee each month to allow tethering. It's not something I'd be using that often, but it's a very useful thing to have from time to time. Does anyone on 3 use tethering without paying the additional charge? I know there's a usb tethering app available (not from the market) that can bypass any software blocks, otherwise I guess I'd have to wait for a modded version of the os for the phone to become available.

Any geeks on 3 can advise?

I had a One contract, monthly rolling (One is the only one that allows tethering?). It's all you can eat data, as in *unlimited*, people leave it running at night to download movies. £25/month sim only.
I put the sim in my netbook, 3 detected this in about 20 mins, blocked it. Has to be in a phone.
I had another non-tether contract with 3 before, they detected tethering in about 10 days, blocked it. 3 guy said with some pride that they have the best algorithms for detecting who is tethering (volume/type of files etc). Much faster detection than O2 etc.
Worked pretty well when I had it, I'd wifi tether mostly. Just don't fall asleep on the phone with this going on, it gets incrediby hot.

I wouldn't be using tethering to take the piss, so hopefully I'll be able to get it through without flagging anything up on their system. Just there in case my broadband goes down to get onto the web or if I'm out and about somewhere and need to do something on my laptop.

Anyway, phone ordered and will be here Tuesday hopefully.

Attach your phone to your computer with a USB cable and when it pops up select "use as USB storage device" (or something like that) and then use windows explorer to hunt around for them.

If you can't do that get Astro File Manager Free from the Android Market and see if you can browse around the phone to find them that way.

I was looking at this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xtralogic.android.rdpclient&hl=en but at £10 I thought I'd check for any advice before buying it.

Anybody use one?

Had decent experiences with logmein ignition which was around same price.
I think there's an android version of pocket cloud which is pretty good on the iPad and free

Can anyone in here recommend a 7" tablet with an HDMI-output capable of:

Skype
iPlayer
SkyGo

Just bought a random one from Amazon but have returned it as, contrary to description's claims, Android 4.0.3/ICS don't seem to like Flash (ie. no iPlayer), SkyGo is a NoGo and Skype wouldn't get beyond the login page...

Cheers, Ed

I'm going to make this thread easier to reference tonight.  I'll be combing through it, adding links in the OP to apps you lot have recommended here.  If you notice anything added that has since turned to rubbish, let me know and I'll remove it.  Cheers!

c:geo is the best geocaching app I've found, but mainly because its free! I think they lost the live mapping after one update, but it's back again and works fine.

Edit, I may as well add some other apps I've found good, now I'm up to my 4th Android device:

Games:
Alchemy
Cut the rope
Jewels
Robotek
Stupid Zombies
Tower Raiders 2

Useful:
Catch (note taking app)
Amazon Kindle (not been mentioned yet?)
Business Calendar Free (excellent calendaring app with good variety of widgets)
Dropbox (cloud storage)
eBay (I use the official app, does the job)
Fancy Widgets (good customisable replacement for the front screen clock/weather widget)
RealCalc (for those who can't do without a scientific calculator)
Sky+ (remote recording on your home sky box)

3 days later, I've managed to root my phone and put a new rom on it.  Not a task for the faint hearted.   rotflmfao

Anyway, while on my knowledge quest of all things android the last few days, I stumbled across something called Plan B.  Very good if you lose your phone - it's installed from the market once you know you've lost it and sends you an email with the GPS details.

Have always used CyanogenMod on my previous android phones as my ROM of choice, but it hasn't been available for the One X as a stable version for actual daily use.

Anyway, it is now so put it on my phone today. Wow, what a difference. The phone was alwayspretty qquick, but now it's like lightning. Incredible difference and so happy I took the time to do it today.

Really can't get better as a game than 9 Innings. Free and yet the level of detail is incredible.

Baseball game (obv). You pick and build your team, you can play offence, defence, run, steal bases, field...

You trade cards and improve your squad. Different modes like home run derby etc.

As good as it gets.

I'm using the latest version of CyanogenMod, which is version 10 - and that's based  on Jellybean.

It took me 3 days, loads of frustration and some hair pulling to get through it.  The biggest problem is the 'how to' information is in their techy language.  I got a bit of help from Jack to keep me sane and it is doable, but it really is hard work if you've never done it before.

I've an HTC Desire and internal memory is rubbish on those.  Even if you move every app to the SD card, a certain amount of app data stays on the internal memory.  I set up a partition on my SD card to trick the phone into thinking 2gb of the card was internal phone memory.  I also did the S-off on the phone.  That was an easy job.  Rooting was easy once I knew how, but took aaaaages to figure out.  Making the SD partition wasn't toooooo bad, but I was still caught on a few steps.  Now the hard work is done, I can install any ROM I like, download whatever apps I like and the phone flies with no space issues.

I have no idea what you just said there :D

What does chaning ROMs (that should be a tv program!) do for you?  Is it worth while?   I was watching a youtube clip but it was half an hour long and to be honest, I'm not sure what it did!  If it makes the phone work quicker I may be tempted.

The phone works MUCH quicker and can be used for much more too now that internal memory isn't an issue.  Root it, partition the card and install a ROM.  [ ] Easy peasy.  That said, if I can do it...anyone can.  I've saved the links to everything I found helpful on the subject and can send them to you if ya like.

Google apps having a sale.  25p apps that would normally cost lots more.  Think they're changing the sale list each day during the sale, but don't quote me on it.

I dare not try it as I am not that good with these sort of things. It is the rooting part that scares me.

It took me 3 days, loads of frustration and some hair pulling to get through it.  The biggest problem is the 'how to' information is in their techy language.  I got a bit of help from Jack to keep me sane and it is doable, but it really is hard work if you've never done it before.

Yeah, and I didn't help you at all ::)

rotflmfao  Oh yeah, Boshi did help a bit.  He laughed a lot too.

Wish someone would sort my Desire out... continually getting insufficient memory warning.

I spent ages this morning trying to free up enough memory to download AND install the Sky go app.

Finally get it installed, for it to tell me that it won't run on a rooted phone! Bastards!!!

Skygo won't run on a rooted phone, and won't run on the One X at all - so it's a bit crap for me!

13 days til I get my S3 which will be my first ever android phone. Can't wait. Back in the day I was a Nokia fanboy then became an apple drone, missus has new iPhone and it's shit. Mate showed me the S3 and I went weak at the knees. The water ripples, the face recog, the size, the weight and all the specs. Looking forward to finally putting this thread to use.

Because its the new iPhone. It's supposed to be a game changer, leader of the pack but it is none of these!

Maps don't work which is utterly ridiculous. I hate having to use iTunes, fair enough I can sync via the cloud but you still have to login to your computer to change songs etc unless you jailbreak it. The new connector is abs shocking. I have adaptors for tonnes of ipods and iphones and now they expect me to get a couple more in at £30 a pop. Hardly has any new features at all. Please tell me what is new? Not talking about the size or weight. What new features does it have? The camera is same res as 4S. Ok it runs faster until you sync all your apps and music to it then its no different to the 4S and in comparison with a Samsung its sluggish. Still no room for extending memory which iPhone users have been calling out for. Still not very customisable unless you jailbreak. I honestly don't see what is appealing?

Thanks for reminding me of this. Bought a couple yesterday. Amazing Alex on the list today, which is made by same people as Angry Birds and is supposed to be pretty good. Can't really go wrong for 25p.

I'm no Apple fanboy but I do have a 4s and the wife has a 5. I also use several Android devices on a daily basis.

Apple really dropped a bollock with the maps but apparently it wasn't just down to Apple why they dropped Google maps.

I use several Android devices on a daily basis, phones and tablets I also use several Apple devices. The ease of use, look, feel, quality design is far greater IMO on the Apple products. Yes Apple do hype better than everyone else and yes they rob us blind but so what. If idiots like me are willing to pay for quality and not plasticky products then that's just a price we have to pay.

Again IMO its def not slower than the S3 and I use both everyday. Ok there's no NFC but I think I'll just swipe my credit card instead. Actually probably easier to do that and less of a risk. Oh, there's no widgets, will have to go and cut my wrists or just click an app.

Apparently there are 200 new features/changes on the 5 but I'm not going to list them.
iTunes isn't everyone's cup of tea but it does what it's supposed too.

The new lightening connector is better and more versatile than the older one yet you are moaning that they've changed it. On the other hand you're moaning that they haven't changed the phone. This makes me smile.

The S3 is a good phone but you know what, so is the 5.

The good lady has procured herself a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tab 2.

Do I set this up as I did my Android phone?  Do I need to install AVG or similar?  She is using it for surfing and Sky Go/IPlayer thats about it.
Any other must have Apps for Android tablet users (Anyone says Candy Crush Saga they can go stand in the corner and have a long hard think about themselves).

Pre loaded Standard photo folder of Double winning sides, wrighty, Highbury etc.
Last night prolonged the marriage at least another week.
I do fear she is brainwashing the child while I am at work, I couldn't share the house with another one.
