I don't really have the knowledge to speculate, but could they have been in a situation where they were on the line and couldn't move off it and if so could a train come that wasn't supposed to?

There has been speculation that they were wearing ear defenders & so never heard the warning by the lookout man. ;

https://twitter.com/PA/status/1146458067585949696

Usually, they have a "lookout" system when a Red Zone is in operation. A man standing further up or down the line blows a horn or sets off a siren, plus a man called a "touch lookout" touches each worker to warn them.  (RedZone is when workers are on the line but trains are still running. Green Zone = no trains running, as the Contrctors have "taken possession" of that section of the track).

In the UK, at Stations, we lose a sense of size of railway rolling stack as the platforms are elevated by around 3'.  In some ways, USA railway stations are so much more dramatic as platforms are at ground level, & a set of steps has to be used to board the train.

For some sense of scale, these double-stacked containers are 53' ers.

The trick, of course, is never to mess about on the PW.

It is deceiving though isn't it? Not only are trains much taller than we imagine when standing on the platform, they look much more menacing with the under-works exposed.

VERY deceiving, & really dramatic to stand at track level, which is why USA railroads (railroads over there, railways here) are so very exciting.

No, exactly the same as the UK - 4 foot 8 & a half inches.

I played golf last week at Birstall GC in Leicestershire which is right next to the steam-engines' old-people's home and they were chuffing and puffing all afternoon.

One even had the temerity to whistle during my backswing!

Lol. That's a nice round number. How did they get there?

I assume that's standard for Europe too?

All of Europe uses "Standard Gauge" except Russia, Finland & ...... Ireland.

If Brunel had his way, the gauge would be 7', & his original railways were all built to that wide gauge. All the other UK railways were built to what is now known as Standard Gauge though, so he was forced to adopt it too.

The benefits of the wider gauge were better stability, & it's a shame he had to change, 7' would be so much better in so many ways.

What about the underground, same gauge?

You would need some pretty huge tunnels for 7'.

Yes, the London Underground has Standard Gauge.

At one time, BR (as was) rolling stock often worked some LU lines (Metropolitan etc) & vice-versa, but I've no idea if this is still the case. In effect though, they are interchangeable, or would be were it not for the very tight tunnel tolerances in the LU.

Note how this fascinating railway convo has driven away all the traffic from your Diary Tom. My work is complete.

As it happens, I have a railway question for you, something that caught my eye at Union Station in Los Angeles. Will post it later, after your Diary traffic has recovered.
