Morning Tom,
Quite by chance, whilst dealing with another matter, I came across this Wiki page this morning. I think you'll enjoy it, almost certainly Rod Paradise, too. Fascinating stuff.
Reversible toes ftw.

I can't tell you how much pleasure I derive from stumbling across these little gems in the course of my job, which is how I came to spot it. Poker to Ospreys, some jump that.

Had no idea they were a migrating bird. Migration. Now that's something gets me reading for the day. Damn. I've a house to clean and you've just scuppered it.

AND they seem to inhabit every Continent except Antartica. Who'd have thunk?
They even appear to have "artificial nests" in the United States of America. Only in America, but on this occasion, glory be.

They are the most amazing birds to see 'in action'. Shame they are so rare now in the UK.

Never seen one, & now, I so want to.
Anyone know where I might be able to see one?

Thanks for that Tikay, only ever seen ospreys once & I went out of my way to go to an RSPB site to see them at the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve in Perthshire.
http://www.swt.org.uk/visit/loch-of-the-lowes-visitor-centre/
Edit - see you are asking ewhere to see them - this is probably the best place & it is in some of the most beautiful countryside you'll ever see.
My Dad had a big argument with the head fella at the Biology institute in Bermuda after he saw an osprey fishing there, David Wingate wasn't for believing it, but eventually someone got a photo, they don't breed there, but are occaisional visitors from migrants blown offshore.
David Wingate was some fella,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_B._Wingate
rediscovered 2 species believed extinct & worked endlessly for conservation. When I was a kid I was lucky enough to do a summer camp with the Bermuda Aquarium & zoo & he took us around Nonsuch Island which is quite strictly offlimits in general.

Thanks to the original, I've had a good long internet ramble through bermuda nature, my old home area (where they're building a new hotel at last) etc etc

Nearest place for you Tikay would be Rutland Water. Need to go at the right time of year though, not sure when that is. I guess when it's a bit warmer?

In just google Map'd that, looks a nice spot, are there any other locations in Scotland where they might be seen?
Preferred time of year? Spring?

That is quite close to home for me, even nearer for Tom, a very nice spot, too.
I'm quite surprised to hear they would be there, but I'm not sure why. Preconceptions I suppose.

A pair were introduced there to breed. Otherwise I think they're mostly found in Scotland and maybe Cumbria. Rutland Water is a great place, going to be using it for some of my marathon training runs - certainly beats running alongside busy roads.

Just put a link in - early April till late August they reckon - obviously it's a coming up to a worrying time for them waiting to see if the birds have made it back from Africa - with the shooting in greece/Malta being a particular worry.
That's the best place I know of - great views of the birds. There are Ospreys in the south of Scotland (Caerlaverock in Dumfries & Galloway) - there's also Red Kites which are still rare up here - which is funny because you can see them regularly outside Reading near the Madjeski.l
