After fifty-odd years of tying my own shoelaces, someone told me yesterday that I'm doing it wrong.
Actually, he made a very good case, and gave me a practical demonstration.
I have no Idea how to explain it in text, but if any of you want to remind me when we next meet, I'll show you.
Is this the actual tying of the laces or the lacing up of the shoe/boot?
I ask as I have a couple of not-so-interesting anecdotes to this.
I was taught that lacing up of boots ahould never be done in the criss cross fashion, also hard to explain in text that you would use one end only to thread up the boot (eyeleted boots only) the reason being that it was more difficult for someone to cut through the criss cross of laces in the need of emergency removal.
Have also heard a few tales concerning Ghurkas sneaking up on postions in the dark and identifying friend or foe by running their fingers up and down the lacing, if not done in the British way, generally you'd get your throat cut. Probably romanticised but I love the thought that this could be true.
Geo
I was talking about tying Geo, but as you've mentioned the actual lacing up, I have to say I can't be doing with the 'one end only' method. I'm strictly a criss cross man. (I'm a bit worried about Ghurkas now though).
I love how you have an anecdote for almost everything. What an interesting life you must have led.
Talking of boots,
The picture from the series that Tonji linked to in TK's diary and the soldier shaving using his helmet as a shaving bowl sits uneasily with me. There is just something that feels unright about it. Haven't cracked it yet..................
The boots he is wearing almost look to be skiing boots and the other guy seems similar. Not sure if that type of boot was available then. The other alternative is that they have the "hook" type fasteners as in the top half of the Cebee boots in my walking thread. Again I'm not convinced that type of fastener was available back then.
Thats what led me to the dogface link I posted on TK's diary as I have been searching for any pics of wartime uniform and specifically boots to try to match them.
The pic looks to "clean" if that makes any sense.
I will keep searching and report back.
Geo
That picture looks to have cleaned up a lot compared to
this version
of it.

Cheers Dino,
It allows you to hover over and magnify, that helps greatly.
Anyone any idea what type of boots they are?
His hair looks too neat also, I would assume like any normal person the shave and washdown would come first and the hair would be the last part of the pruning process.

Neat and clean, with shiny boots and pressed uniforms. Sounds like the Italian Army.

Pretty hard to fly in a box though and the bird probably gets a food reward for reaching the banana

That reminds me! Did you watch the Brian Cox "Night with the Stars" that was on at the weekend?
It's on iPlayer if you missed it:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b018nn7l/A_Night_with_the_Stars/
Well worth a watch, and just love the bit about the Pauli Principle (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauli_exclusion_principle
) and Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncertainty_principle
) and just wish my physics teachers had been half as interesting as Coxy.
Just watched it. Excellent as per.
Make sure I don't miss anything else please.

Yesterday was the longest night of the year. The winter solstice.
From now on, the nights are getting shorter, & the days are getting longer.
Summer draws on.

A few hundred years ago, before we understood anything about our anatomy, do you think we knew that thoughts happened in our heads rather than say, in our chests for example?
I mean, when you think something, you can't feel where it's happening can you?

Man's evolution has progressed at a phenomenal rate over the last century, and particularly over the last 50 of it. That's my lifetime and I'm so glad it was. First space exploration and man on the moon. Colour TV and satellite broadcast to enable us to watch live stuff from across the globe, namely the classic Muhammad Ali fights. Commercial air travel becomming accessable to most. The fall of Aparthied, and communism throughout Europe. The birth of Rock and Roll thanks to Elvis, the Beatles and the Stones to mention just a few. 60's 70's 80's and right up to present day the music has been fantastic and evolved thanks to man's inventions. The micro chip, where do you start with that? Well the main one for us on here is the home computor/laptop, poker obviously but the worlds info is out there from our living rooms. As is communication with email, video links etc.
Here's to the next 50, what's next?
Happy Christmas Tom to you and your family, also to everyone who reads this marvellous diary.
