Mousetrap update.
Moved bottle closer to top of church. Now peanut butter gone from rim and topside of bottle. Bottle also turned a little.

I think we need a mouse-cam.

Mousetrap update.
Peanut butter smeared on rim of churn gone, bottle undisturbed.
Conclusions?
Peanut butter evaporstes rapidly when removed from package and spread. Amazed the readers of this diary were ignorant to that obvious fact.

Should the unlikely occur and you humanely catch a few mice what will you do with them?
I'll put the lid on the churn and put it in the boot of the car and drop them off somewhere scenic a few miles away.
Don't get me wrong, I think break back traps are humane, but I'm getting a bit soft and sentimental in my old age.
Watch this break back trap in action. The suspense is terrible.
Warning, graphic content.

Why is it called a "break back" trap?
EDIT. Ignore that, just watched the video. Agree, more suspense than a Hitchcock film. Horrible ending, too.

You're talking utter bollocks as usual.
Try smearing some peanut butter on your glasses before you go to bed and see if it's gone in the morning.

Are you sure it's not a squirrel eating your peanut butter, having a spin round on your bottle and then leaping out of your churn to safety?

No, it's a mouse. He leaves his calling card.

Is the bottle too liable to spin for the mouse to risk standing on it? With moving further from the edge & unstable footing it might be too worrying for the mouse to risk?

I think you are right Rod. Either that or the churn rim isn't wide enough to make him commit.
I might try a see-saw mechanism. When he moves to the baited end, it tips him in.
I can't believe you got the hyena thing btw. WP.
