I'll tell you what I find incredible. According to Wiki he highest measured speed of a peregrine falcon is 242 mph. Now if I do 100mph on a motorcycle the wind almost tears me off it, so how does a bird manage to get through the air so fast.

Terminal velocity for a human falling is 122mph, how is something with the size to weight ratio of a sock in a paper bag capable of going twice as fast?

I'm surprised the sonic boom doesn't scare off the perigrine's prey.

Anyone seen a swallow this year? they're late on parade as well

No Trev. Haven't seen a swallow or heard a cuckoo.

Swallow migration depends on the conditions in Africa - if the going is good they will stay a bit longer.

Being a king has it's drawbacks, especially if you are fifty nine years old, scarred by many hard fought battles, physically restricted in your movements, and black.

The old king reflected upon his past life as he stumbled back towards the territory that for so many years he had struggled to defend against the invading hordes. He thought wistfully of the quiet periods between wars when he could be close to his beloved queen and surrounded by his loyal subjects, but, he admitted to himself, even then his time was not his own, he had to be constantly on display, like a painting or a piece of art.

He remembered battles from his past when his warriors had fought well and shared the spoils of victory, and he paid silent homage to the many who had sacrificed themselves in his defence.

Now all his men had fallen and he stood alone. He could see quite clearly the sallow face of the youth, not yet twenty, who commanded the enemy force, directing them with small movements of his hand.

Almost surrounded, the old king knew that it was useless to run. He also knew that he would not suffer the same noble fate as his fallen men. No, he would be imprisoned, deprived of his power and his liberty. For someone like him, that would be the worst possible end.

If I can't have victory, the old king thought as he lay himself down, at least I can accept defeat with grace and dignity. After all, this is only a game, and I'm just a wooden chess piece.

I'm sure you all remember back in the autumn when I said that the trees were late shedding their leaves, well they are late getting them back too. Its like they've decided to have a bit of a lie in.

My hedge is mostly Hawthorn & beech with a peppering of other stuff and the leaves are only just coming through now.

If we carry on at this rate, it won't be summer until November.

Just been a wander up the woods by the river at lunchtime & the undergrowth (wild garlic, primrose) are up, and the honeysuckle is in leaf, desperately trying to get some sunshine before the trees put them in the shade. The lower trees (hazel, hawthorn) are in bud at last, looking to get their share before the oaks and beeches really cover the sky up.

Definitely a late spring, the 'herd had to take the sheep in as they'd grazed out their winter field & the new growth was late, they're just back in all lambed, which took the fun of watching for the first away.
