Courtesy of Radio Four I learned today, with maximum flabbergastery, that AI is not allowed for racing thoroughbreds.
Say what? Why is that, and how the Hell do they enforce it?

(he means artificial insemination, not robot brains for horses)
A reason I heard is that without the need for some physical presence, only a few studs would be able to father the entire next generation's horses and things would get too imbred. I think it's just the way things are done though. Lots of people would lose their jobs if there was only a turkey baster needed. And everyone probably makes more money this way.

The studs that own the stallions set the prices so obviously these would drop if AI was allowed. There are also a stack of integrity (and welfare) issues that could arise with widespread AI.

Cheers guys, that makes sense actually, it just never occurred to me that they didn't use AI.
Still though, I bet they wish they had half a pint of Shergar sloshing around in a fridge somewhere.

Yes Boo, it came out OK. It took me over a fortnight though, I'm so slow and achy these days.

We're all great thanks Kev, in fact I've just about reached the stage where I think 'Blimey, something has to go wrong soon'. Fortunately, most of the time it doesn't, and if it does, most of the time it's not as big a deal as I worried it might be.
Does that make any sense at all?
How's your lot?
