More amazing case and death numbers today, long may it continue!

With alleged rumours of a green light for USA travel on the cards from the 17th May the real big question is what are the odds of Monsieur Russell and I flying to Vegas in 9 weeks time!??

https://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/commentisfree/2021/apr/04/how-is-it-possible-that-the-number-of-deaths-is-now-so-low

David Spiegelhalter covers why overall deaths are now lower than any year since 2014.

Mild winter weather correlates well with winter deaths over time.

Flu has genuinely been very low across the World in the last year or so, with pretty much all countries with good statistics reporting low levels.

Interestingly he revisits the number of deaths that were brought forward by the original wave of coronavirus and states it was only 5% to 15% would have died within a year anyway.  This backs up some of the estimates where the average death from Covid has been losing around 10 years of life (and not the few months some less reputable sources frequently claim).

As shown before here, there haven't been large increases in deaths in many causes over the last year or so.

FWIW I think the road deaths comment he makes is wrong, that looks like a monthly figure.

Smileys won't like that article.

Yeadon has  spun off the planet, Gary Busey styleeeeeeee  Shocked

https://twitter.com/_johnbye/status/1378469156211810308

This is the first post in a long thread.

Michael Yeadon has done a series of interviews recently claiming that covid vaccines are a plot to depopulate the Earth.

Former colleagues were already concerned about his mental state before he left Twitter, and sadly it only seems to have got worse since then.

I saw one of his recent interviews and he looks like in a bad way too.  When I just read his words I didn't get the full Yeadon experience.  It is odd how a fair few of them have definitely moved on to more crazy theories as much of the news has become very positive.  It really is as if they don't even see the good news at all.   Most of them used to retweet all kinds of moans about all the bad news causing mental health problems, but don't seem at all concerned with the mental health effects that their bad "news" causes.

For anyone looking at Covid numbers right now.  There was a warning on the Government website that figures would be inaccurate and laggy over Easter.  They are not updating some figures at all.  So whilst deaths and hospitalisations are clearly falling still, the numbers announced are likely to be quite wrong.

Zoe app reporting less than 3,000 new cases a day.

Good news indeed, I assume this is pretty reliable as you can just update this from your sofa.

It is bizarre that we are now offered two lateral flow tests a week.  It seems more than a bit late and there has got to be some serious doubts about their reliability as cases drop.  This is simply because the proportion of false positives will rise as genuine positives fall.

Just have to go with the flow, I guess Cheesy

From what Paul Charles is saying, we'll just have to take one before we go on holiday, too.

Israel producing more impressive figures despite their reopening happening quicker than ours.

https://mobile.twitter.com/segal_eran/status/1378786655679692802

From the peak of mid-January:
96% fewer cases
90% fewer new daily critically ill
85% fewer deaths

I know they have vaccinated more than us, but it should show us we haven't much to fear from accelerating the reopening.  I think our figures are very similar from peak.

Truly unfathomable to spend this much time and resource finding people who don't feel ill in case they infect people who will struggle to get seriously ill. True fuckheadery of the highest order. Wondering about the demographic that will voluntarily apply for and take these tests.

I'll get a couple before I go on holiday, and use them before flights if allowed.

Otherwise who the fuck is going to hunt about to get tests in?

I can't think of many other uses other than to get on a plane.  Guess you could get one if you have spent some time with someone who tests positive, but that is going to be so rare going forward.
