I learned an interesting and obscure new fact the other day about Lauren Bacall.
Her first cousin was the celebrated Israeli labour polititian and several times Prime Minister Simon Peres.
It had never even occurred to me that she might be Jewish.
I love all this unseen connections stuff Ralph.
Do you remember James Burke with his Connections Programme?
I've never even heard of that series Tom - as I suspected pre-googling it was aired in the 1970's during my exile in Canada.
It looks interesting though..

It was aired in the 70s, but amazingly, it looks as though that episode I linked to is the first of a new series.

Two guys decide to flip a coin, best of five, each puts £50 into the pot.
Jim take heads, Ron takes tails.
The first three flips come heads, heads, tails, then an emergency happens and the game has to be abandoned.
How should the money be shared out to reflect what has already happened?

For Ron to win requires tails on the next two flips.
That will happen once in four - 1/2 x 1/2 =1/4
Jim wins the other three times so Jim gets 3/4 of the money - £75, and Ron gets £25

Yes, but apparently two blokes called Pascal and Fermat argued about it for ages.

Yes, apparently they kept changing their mind until Fermat's Last Theorem.

I learned loads about predicting and probability yesterday.
The wisdom of crowds and the law of large numbers.

Isn't it great?

Tank and I went to a Simon Singh lecture on probability a few years back, a very interesting talk, entertaining delivery. I went searching to see if there was a video, but he still delivers the lecture so I guess he doesn't want us all watching it on Youtube (probably
).
While looking I found this -
https://www.simonsingh.net/Simpsons_Mathematics/
- Which begins with the story of Prince Monolulu the Derby Tipster who claimed to be from Abyssinian Royalty - Tikay might remember him....
