1  Community Forums / The Lounge / Re: Chess thread on: October 03, 2012, 08:56:04 AM
A thought occurred to me this morning: I was reading an interesting article in the Sunday Times about the rise of women in society compared to historical expectations, and how they are now dominating education (58% of university entrants), and a lot of new entrants to the professions now (new doctors and solicitors are majority female), but then you see pics of chess tournaments, and they are all blokes. I'm assuming that if a women was ranked high enough, she'd be playing, so I presume there are few (none?) high ranked women? Any in the world top 10 at the moment? Top 20? Has there ever been a female in the top 10?

Was wondering why this was. Obviously there are considerable historic reasons for few women, but I suspect these days it is more likely to be neurological reasons - it's long been accepted that women's brains are different (on average), and I suspect the differences generally give men the advantage when it comes to chess.

What are your thoughts?

ouch. fyp

1. Rake V Session Fees AND Charge (DTD rake only) Rake is ok now imo, sessions deffo works out cheaper for myself, but it often leads to the breaking of games when people are considering going, and dont wanna chuck in another £7 or whatever. Maybe you could do the 'happy hour' kind of thing where the rake cap is halved from 8-9pm and and the last hour before closing (obv to get games started earlier and finishing later)

2. Levels of games on offer (we spread 50p-£1 +) Fine. Good change in 50/1 and 1/1 to differentiate games a bit from 'begginers' tables and low stakes

3. Straddles allowed/ limited (we dont allow straddles on 50-£1) Limit to one straddle on 1/1 and above imo. Open to table in the £5/10+ invite games

4. Min/Max buy-ins at start of game (varies on game) I think the min buy ins are fine, prob feel there needs to be a £500 max and then half biggest stack on the 1/2, after reading a lot of the feedback comments. The current min/ no limits for £2/5+

5. Max buy in when game has been running (doesnt change at DTD) Half biggest stack seems fair

6. Buy the button (not allowed in DTD) Deffo should be changed to allow, never really got why not

7. Run it twice (only allowed in uncapped games) If the games are capped, the pots shouldnt get so big that it requires it in £1/2. Maybe just £2/5+ like the Vic do, but doesnt really bother me either way. Do agree with Julian that people could be taken advantage of a bit, or simply 'not get it'.

8. Rabitt hunting (not allowed I think, erm...) Hard to leave to dealer discression, id rather just get rid of it, as if it was 'allowed' it would almost deffinatley get overused

9. Spectators in the cash game area Maybe could show a bit more leniency, dont mind someones Mrs sat behind them, but not a group of mates, the odd conversation with somebody you havent seen for a while is fine, but should be left to dealer to ask them to move away if theyre particularly loud during a large pot etc. Also, players in the game should have controll over this aswell imo.

10. Opening/Closing times for kicking out cash game players 4am weekdays, 5:30 weekends was ideal. Theres deffinatley been a few times of late where ive been busy at night and not bothered coming in from, say 11:30, because it didnt seem worth it. Also people more likely to travel from further if they can get more playing hours in.

11. Complementories - food and drink DTD does free soft and hot drinks/ some food compted on £2-£5 + games) Amazing how much people appreciate the gesture of free food, compared to finding out they have to pay. Think the way it was is fine.

12. Rake Races, Bad beat jackpots (weve not tried them) Not a fan myself, especially if tis taking extra rake. If its being taken from the rake thats already collected then obv its a nice little bonus

13. Barring Team Eureaka / Winning players Smiley Smiley Smiley no comment

14. Rake on split pots (we rake) Not too fussed, but it is another thing that i have heard people moan about who travel from other places. It happens so rare in holdem anyway that id you did change it, you could advertise it as a bit of an initiative to play more which people would appreciate

I have just learned that a word you use to avoid swearing (fiddlesticks, shucks, dang...), it is called a minced oath.

Language. Bloomin brilliant, ain't it?!

I learned that last week, can't remember where, I presume it must have been QI.

Only Connect, last night. Connecting Wall, examples were Darn, Freak, Shoot, and Dickens (which apparently substitutes for Devil).

Not that I'm a sad stalker of Victoria Coren or anything.

I think you need to be a bit more specific with your boundaries - if you're assuming say 50-80 players, and you want to finish in around 6-7 hours, realistically, you have 3 choices - 5000/30, 10000/25, 15000/30. Personally I'd go for the middle option of those three.

I have to pick a diary to put this on, and feel this is the most suitable. This is complete genius and should be Team Eureka's next house purchase. Perfect for the grinding sessions.

Unfortunately not available to actually buy yet, but is apparently happening.

Pretty sure that's illegal

That's what I thought, she'd had a bit to drink but mentioned the figures about 20 times and said the same thing every time. I asked her how they get away with it and she said they found some loophole in the system.

Sounds pretty brutal. Quick google gave this page for minimum wage and piece work:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/TheNationalMinimumWage/DG_175097

Wonder if they gave the written notice there. You'd expect a big company like this would comply with the letter of the law if not the spirit, but I also guess there is very little she can do about it if she wants to keep her job Sad.

New list of sale apps this morning.  Not sure if any of them are decent...look pretty meh to me, but I'm clueless.

Thanks for reminding me of this. Bought a couple yesterday. Amazing Alex on the list today, which is made by same people as Angry Birds and is supposed to be pretty good. Can't really go wrong for 25p.

That people like red Ferrari's ?

No no, not at all Ray!

ALL Ferraris should be red, who on earth would want any other colour. HAS to be red.  A yellow Ferrari is so so common.

Not a subscriber to this. Crass V8 Ferraris maybe. If I ever had a spare 5 figures, I'd have myself one of these, in this colour:

Nice refined 575M V12 GT. Lovely. Start at about 50k these days. Positively cheap.
That does look nice. Don't the other Ferraris owners call that a poor mans Ferrari tho?

Not that I know of. It was ~£150-180k when new, more than the contemporary V8 model (360/430) so I'd be surprised.

Or am I being trolled? Smiley
lol no not at all. £50k through me. Must be quite a few year old?

Produced 2002-5. Be a while before it hits classic status. Thankfully not as old or rare as the last 250GTO to sell (for $35m). And that was lime green!

You aren't allowed computers or electronic devices of any kind in competition so it's odd that this was allowed at all.

I know very little about the chess world, but the article implied this eNotate software was approved for use by the North American Chess Association. Each copy registered, checks made, locks for the software so everything else is disabled, etc.

Pretty brazen to get away with it, and the article implied he'd could have done it since middle of last year based on a rather steep change in ratings:

Chess scandal!

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8362701/the-evolution-cheating-chess

Got linked to by a tech news summary thing I subscribe to. Loooong article, but the techie interest is near the bottom where it talks about locks that are supposed to prevent the note taking app from allowing other apps to run, and whether they were circumvented, or he just never ran the note app in the first place.

There has been a recent Java exploit that only requires an infected website to be visited - no user interaction at all. Not saying it was this, but possible.

Been in Java for a while apparently. If you've not updated recently, probably worth doing.
