It seems all we hear nowadays is how screwed the UK economy is and how the government have got no spare money
and in times of austerity how we must make cuts and look after what we have got...

...so why is then that every other Saturday a team of at least a dozen workmen and at
least 6 council vehicles (flat bed trucks, pick ups and vans etc.) are engaged in cutting the grass and trimming the
hedges on our local traffic islands.

Now I like to see a well presented roundabout as much as the next person but does it really need to be done on
a Saturday when the likelyhood is that these workmen are probably on double and triple time?

Surely the money could be put to better use.

I dont know why but this really pisses me off.

BMW service who tell you your car needs 4 new tyres because 3 have 'unrepairable' punctures.

Take them to a decent tyre place who repairs them all for £6 a piece.

Ring BMW service to ask wtf they were on about who say:

"Our policy is to never repair a tyre".

Run Flat Tyres. Extra Strength in the walls of the tyres enable the car to drive even with 0 psi in  4 tyres.

I have 2 ways of dealing with these people.
 1. keep jamming the * and # buttons until the phone system goes into meltdown and you get through to an operator (usually fairly quickly)
or 2. choose the sales option no matter what your query and make them transfer you pretty sure these companies value there new sales over the existing customers so these options are usually 1 on the list and are answered the quickest.

Ordered a before 9am delivery as normal, woke up at 7.30am and was ready to receive by 7.45am and listening out for them. I live behind a secure gate that needs a code to get through, I passed on the gate code as I always do. 9.30am nothing..........so I called them up, 'there was an attempted delivery at 8.04am sir' eh, WTF? Is the guy a fucking ninja or something? I can usually hear the van. Turns out he wasn't passed on the gate code, ok no problem we can work around that I thought, we all make mistakes.

I was working in a hotel around the corner from where I live today, it is literally 500 yards from my house, I mean literally. So I asked can you drop at the hotel as I need to go there now? Got back to me 30 mins later 'sorry sir we cannot do that its in a different postal area from your house, a different driver covers that delivery area', me 'WTF Its literally 500 yards from my house?', him 'sorry standard SOP'. I blew my fucking top at this point.

Got called back an hour from some supervisor who managed to sort it but I didn't get the stuff until 2pm. I've shorted this story as I can't be arsed writing it it full but there were a few other phone calls I had to make to get it to happen.

The thing about the post codes is what frustrates me most. Considering a lot of these guys have paid good money to get their vans plastered with the City Link logo, I never ceased to be amazed at their lack of willingness to actually go out and do their job and deliver parcels. I personally work nights and am in involved in the route planning for the drivers, so I'll be the twunt who has to deal with the sort of issue you had all day long and it never ceases to get me worked up.

Problem is we have a system in which the majority of the drives are self-employed. They buy the rights to a post-code (e.g. SS1-SS7) and as a result will only deliver in that area. Therefore in your case it's likely that the postcode became SS8 (for example) when your house is in SS7 and as a result the driver can refuse to do the delivery as he is only meant to do SS1 to SS7.

I could go on and on about that company, but there's no point in me getting worked up. All I know is if it carries on at this rate Rentokil will have had enough before long and we'll all be without a job.

Is it anything to do with their area not being the other postcode (SS8 in your example) and the terms of their contract state they can't deliver there? You might be annoyed if you paid to be the SS8 driver and someone else delivered there.

Had a similar thing with Dominoes many years ago - they refused to deliver to where we were because it was outside their franchise area (by about 500 yards) - despite their being no other dominoes for miles around.

It's not that really. When you buy a postcode you're effectively buying the rights to deliver there and to be the only who is able to do so (obviously). However you're doing that for no other reason than to ensure you have work as it means no-one else can deliver there.

That said, if you spoke to the driver who owned the rights to SS8 he's hardly going to throw a fit when he founds out the reasoning for another driver delivering in his postcode - especially as it saves him another delivery the next day.

In the case mond described, it simply sounds like the driver couldn't be arsed to actually go and do his job and deliver the parcel as it meant traveling a far distance so managed to hide behind the postcode change.

Most drivers whinge, whine and act like teenage girls when they're given quite a number of drops so they'll do their up most to lose a few deliveries if they can.

Then again my bias always shines through as I dislike most drivers immensely. I can't understand why they chose to drive then spend all day and night doing their absolute best to avoid doing the job at hand. Fuck 'em.

City Link are probably the worst for this to be honest.  The missus had a lot of photographs delivered from the framers, and I went to the door to take the delivery.  He opened the side-door of the van and the parcels in the back were strewn everywhere.  I made sure I signed as 'unseen', and sure enough when we checked the pictures, two had the glass broken , despite them being wrapped VERY carefully by the framers.

We called the framers and they said it had happened before, and we told them about the state of the stuff in the van.  They replaced the frames at their cost (obviously), and we suggested they use a different courier next time.  They replied "but they're far cheaper than anyone else."  ;dingdell;

Not had that problem actually. I normally get about 3 or 4 boxes which are piled in one corner of the van so they don't get banged around in the back of it.

If you want to be specific then regarding teachers, if you take their actual hourly pay then it is close to min wage, one of the main reasons you work for the public sector is to get these perks to offset the shit pay.  If you pay penuts, you get monkeys. Why would anyone spend 50hrs a week teaching and marking for 25k a year and no perks? If you continue trimming these perks and not improving their basic pay then you will only attract idiot teachers and all the best will leave the proffession or teach at private schools. I taught at a school/college, I doubled my wage for a piss easy IT job. Teaching just aint worth the hassle unless you knew it would be worth it for the good pensions/holidays etc...

Don’t know what teacher pay in London is but in Leeds 4-5 years ago most were on 20-30k. Head teacher, head of years etc I guess were on 40k+ Put into the mix college teachers are on a lot less. It’s good that those that teaches the most vulnerable and in need is valued much less in colleges.

The facts say outside London most are on 20-30k like I said. if normal teachers are on 45-50k then I will work there tomorrow then!

I worked on average 58 hrs a week (marking marking marking) and this was for 44 weeks a year, for 25k which gave me under £10 an hour. Add to this the shit you have to do now, the responsibilities and  looking after the kids, not being able to actually discipline anyone its not worth it.

A lot of the decent teachers I knew left so they could A) have a life B) earn some decent money C) have a less stressful job.

The key thing for teaching is the pension is crucial because frankly you will find it hard to teach past your mid 50's, especially if it’s a high school. The decent pension means most will retire mid 50s and be able to lead a decent lifestyle. Now we can argue the pedantics of how good or bad their pension is and if it is too high but that’s not the point. The issue is they are royally pissed off because the terms and conditions of their pensions they signed up for and worked all their life’s for has been changed coz the governments can’t run the country and skinto. I know I would be angry in any job if halfway through I got shit on.

I know its flavour of the month to bash collective bargaining for the work force, but if done correctly and avoiding strikes (which i am opposed to) it is a great thing and protects the worst paid, most vulnerable in society. We have to be really carful in this country not to follow how some states (Wisconsin) or you will end up no one with any brains wanting to work in the public sector and especially in those jobs that look after, teach and are key to the future.

To say you need a better pension deal because working after 50 is tough is just not on, IMO. I find it tough working now, it's not going to be an easier when I'm over 50 either. People have to accept that we will live longer, on average, and the pension will therefore have to last longer. It will be more expensive and it will now be too expensive to keep the current pension deals in place.

This is not just about teachers BTW this goes for all public sector workers.

I was just making the point that those salaries are fine for what they do, they all need to something to work for and aspire to to earn extra money. There is opportunity to earn extra if the take on more responsibility, my friends do but they go out of their way to do it.

For what they do I think what they get is fair, but their pensions are totally excessive as with many public sector workers.

But the point is not if their pension is fair or not. Its weather you can change the terms and conditions off anyone’s pension after they worked under the assumption it would be a certain level when they retire. Public, private, or whoever I would deem this a lame move on behalf of the employer if it was done to me.

It might be a lame move on behalf of the employer but since WE are the employers and are paying for it whilst we ourselves have to tighten our belts and deal with our pensions being cut, I don't see why we (the Govt) shouldn't take a hard look at public sector pensions as well.

I would agree that to do this to people that have been working for 20-30 years is not right and they should be protected...no problem with that at all. But to see people in their 20s and 30s in the streets protesting over this shit really pisses me off. Their pensions have to be cut now.

Clare Road, Halifax media reports state that teachers get 12 weeks holiday a year. Do we? There are 365 days in a year. There are 52 weeks in a year, which means there are 104 Saturdays and Sundays. So, from 365 subtract 104; that means there are 261 working days.
Teachers are committed to 195 days from the 261; thus teachers are out of school for 66 days (13 working weeks and one day).
But everyone is entitled to holiday days. If you take the average holidays to be 25 days then subtract 25 days from 66; that leaves 41 days that teachers have "extra" to those not in teaching.
There are eight bank holidays; 41 minus eight leaves 33 days that teachers have "extra".

Most jobs involve a 40-hour week, but data has shown that teachers work more than 50 hours a week. This means that teachers work 10 hours more per week that the norm, equivalent to two hours per teaching day, without pay.

195 days worked at two hours extra per day means 390 hours extra per year; 390 hours divided by eight hours (an eight-hour day equals a 40-hour week) equals 48.75 extra days.

This means that, although teachers appear to "gain" 33 days more than others, their working schedule equates to an extra 48 days, leaving teachers 15 days worse off!

No offence taken at all, my sisters a teacher, and while I worked today she didnt. She also told me the other day she has 6 weeks off for t summer, saying that I know how hard she works and how long her day can be.

brilliant. so teachers earn close to minimum wage (a point you proved by showing calculations that at the very bottom of the pay scale they earn £10/hour, a number which really isn't close to min wage) and now they get 15 days less holiday than everyone else due to some really dodgy calculations

Yeah, I was at work today and just finished a 60 hour week in which 800 people in my area of the business are out of a job. The job that has gone would have been my next promotion so pretty pissed off in general.

25k is pretty much the average for the point of entry and for the first 2-3 years..not the bottom of the scales as thats 22k. Earning £10 an hour imo is not something a proff. qualified person (degree, PGCE etc) should be aiming for. Hence why I left teaching.

I have never read so much twaddle on a thread for a long time!

I think my favourite line of it all is that teachers have a stressful job! Gtfo!

All this thread goes to show is that people who work in the public sector really are as deluded as I thought they were!

I have listened to much of the media on this matter and can safely say that I haven't heard a single compelling arguement in support of the teachers! If you don't like it, move on with your skill set and earn more money doing something else if it's that easy.............. Oh wait!

Teachers are institutionalised lifers who wouldn't know what a hard days work was if they read about it in a text book!

We have so many fare dodgers on the trains that before you approach them you know just what to expect. I never used to generalize but trust me these buggers stand out.

 What really pisses me off is the way they seem believe it is the first time you have seen the " Sleeping Pocket Dance" ,  ie . they get on the train and within 20 seconds they are fast on asleep then they proceed when requested for ticket after asking avg 5 times to wake them ,  they then tap every pocket on their persona. Resulting in " Oh I had one but it has gone".

Now I am not a jobs worth, but i hate to be thought of as an idiot from some unknown reason this is the only thing at work that tilts me terribly.

Oh and the ladies wearing Burkhas plus glasses then showing a photo ID to a seasonal pass.

Most of the people who went on to become teachers from my uni days were the ones who got poor degrees and could not find anything better to do than go into teaching whilst they got something better. Well nothing better ever cane along for any of em coz they still teach.

Have teachers been striking ? I remember way back when Mr Jones striked me for skiving, Think he got a kick out of it, come to think of it that cane looked patchey.

In the strike there was a photo of a teacher with a banner that had a spelling mistake on it - technically I suppose that part should be in the things that make you happy thread :)

So I'll add - teachers complaining they start on a low pay when it's over the median pay for the country - it's slightly less than the average graduate salary (£25k) - but I'm fairly sure that the people I've seen complaining about it weren't thinking about that, they just genuinely considered it as low pay.

Oh and the same drivers usually brake at every slight bend in the road, even when there is no need as the bend is so slight and they are going so bloody slowly to start with!

why is the speed limit relevant?

The highway code states that drivers should make good progress, and on a clear road that is national speed limit the only reason they are going at that speed is that they are not aware of what the speed limit is. Then when they enter a section of road where there are pedestrians and the speed limit reflects that, they continue to disregard the road and conditions.

last two weeks have been brutal for me speeding wise. 35 in a 30 zone going through Headingly! wtf its impossible to ever go that speed there with the traffic! then a cop pulls me over for going 40 in 30 zone just coming out of 50 zone, literally hanging at the edge waiting for peeps not slowing down fast enough. Had screaming baby in car needing feed and the cop sure was sympathetic.

A trip to the bakers.  And 4 strikes in quick succession.  I only wanted a bacon sarnie ffs.

1. Litter.  4 arseholes in their Corsa wind down the window and drop the leftover KFC on the kerbside.

2. People's complete indifference to the plight of others.  A woman struggling with 3 toddlers and shopping in a shop doorway. ONE toddler down.  Two items of shopping down.  THREE people step over all of the above, tutting as they go.

3.  Dunce in the bakers.  Been there over a month, I am literally not kidding when I say he hasn't yet grasped the difference between a large brown sandwich loaf and a small white farmhouse.

4.  People that can't wait for you to drive past when you are the only car on the road.  If you can't wait those 3 seconds, please at least put your foot down when you pull out on me.  Instead, the tit today managed 5 mph, then stopped at a traffic island (blocking) and tried to engage a passer by in conversation - I really appreciated it.

5.  People that have to resort to lists to remember all the things they want to moan about.

When you go shopping and the shop assistant proceeds to give you your change by firstly placing the receipt in your hand then any paper money on top of the receipt and then finally the coins on top of the paper money.

That's an odd one...why?

When they place the aforementioned change on a wet bar (obviously in a pub).

If they do that then it's not a smooth transition from hand to pocket, you have to arse about with shopping in 1 hand and money/receipt in the other. I like to keep notes in 1 pocket and change in the other.

Cards have the additional problem that some places have a system set up which makes it slower to pay by card, and obviously people themselves can take an age using a card (although they're probably the exact same people who faff about for change when they're paying cash)

but basically you're not pissed off by people paying by card - you're pissed off by people being slow.

UK's broadband network/coverage.  Abysmal compared to lots of other countries that we should at least be on a par with.

Same for fuel.  People who put £10 worth of petrol in, spend ages trying to work out the pump (as they are all so different), then have to work out how the open the petrol cap, then put the blue gloves on (WTF is that all about?), then fill it slowly to the £10 level, then spend ages taking off the gloves, putting the cap back, then go in to pay (probably split between a card with a £5 limit and cash), then they come back out and sit in their car for ages examining their receipt, applying their make-up (girls as well), picking their nose, adjusting their seat (yeah, because it's moved loads since you sat in it last), checking the receipt again, putting on their seat-belt, checking their mirror, pulling out slowly, stopping so they can change the radio station or change the CD to the 'Best of Steps', put their lights on, pull out slowly a bit further, stop to let three people walk in front, let two other cars pull out, then eventually drive off.

Why are these people always at the pump I queue behind?

Petrol stations come supermarkets.

Yes they are convenient but I believe they are the downfall of this country. When petrol stations just sold fuel and other motoring related items we all did our shopping at the local shops and the money we spent stayed local. These local shops were the lifeblood of the local community. Along come petrol stations trying to expand their wares and the next thing you know is that Bolt has been banned, Blatch has grimmed the world, the bankers have gambled (and lost) our money, 2 Gulf wars, 9/11, 7/7. Joking aside you can now get all you need to survive from a petrol station from food and drink to medication and news papers and all this means that the large super market chains play such an integral part of our lives that we lost what it really means to be a community.

Petrol stations at supermarkets selling loads of additional goods and being more expensive. WTF? The supermarket is just 100 yards away, how the hell can you charge £1 more for the same bottle of water?
